Church of San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes, Santu Lussurgiu

The Church of San Leonardo stands in the forest area of San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes (so called “for the seven springs which gush from the ground”), the only hamlet in the town of Santu Lussurgiu.

The church has a single nave and was built with medium-sized trachyte and basaltic ashlars.

There is no information on the establishment of the church or its building, but based on the formal data, it was built in two different stages.

Its construction dates to the second half of the XII century in Romanesque-Pisan style, like the flat talus base, corner blocks, horizontal arching and the Tympanum gable.

In the first quarter of the XIV century, it was rebuilt in Gothic style. The sides and apse were demolished, the hall was raised and expanded with the construction of a square choir with ogival monophor and externally split into transoms. The roof in the hall has wooden trusses supported by Gothic arches.

The decision to keep the ancient facade led to obligatory solutions, which gave the Gothic modes a Romanesque twist.

Furthermore, on the main facade, to create symmetry, a second portal with moulded shapes in Gothic style was opened up, similar to the two on the sides.

The structure, to the side of the choir, has a bell gable with ogival curved double-arched window.
