Batteria militare Talmone_FAI

The Military Outpost of Talmone stands at Punta Don Diego, between the beaches of Palau and Costa Serena. The structure is part of a defence system erected at the end of the 1700s and is an important reminder of our country’s military history.

The complex played an important role in defending the borders after the Unification of Italy, when the royal fleet was housed at the La Maddalena base. Of all the fortifications built, the Talmone was entrusted with keeping the channel separating Spargi from Sardinia under fire; the stretch of water it overlooks was stage to battles throughout the second world war. In 1947, the Treaty of Paris obliged Italy to dismantle the base and decommission all the military outposts. Decades of abandonment followed up until 2002, when the Sardinian Regional Council entrusted the military outpost under licence to the FAI (Italian National Trust).

The military outpost is fully integrated with the surrounding environment and can be reached after walking for about 45 minutes along a delightful path immersed in rich Mediterranean shrub.
