The State Archive in Sassari was established on 15 April 1959 with a Ministerial Decree and based on the structure of the Interior Ministry up until 1974, when it was incorporated into the Heritage and Environment Ministry.

In 1963, the Institute located to the premises in Corso Angioy. The following year, the first documents from the Prefecture in Sassari arrived along with those from the Provincial Treasury Directorate in Sassari, including Clelia Garibaldi’s pension book.

At the SS. Annunziato Monumental Complex – former public hospital in Sassari, and home to the State Archive since July 2019, nowadays an office of the Ministry for Culture, the following is preserved, protected and valued:

  • Documentation produced prior to the last thirty-year period by the judiciary in the Kingdom of Sardinia and by the judicial and administrative bodies of the Italian State in the province;
  • the notary deeds from the districts of Sassari, Alghero, Ozieri and Tempio up until 1918;
  • the archives of abolished religious orders in Alghero, Ozieri, Padria and Pozzomaggiore;
  • some important archives of private individuals (both donated and deposited there) and of public bodies.

The research work is open to the public and free and is carried out with the help of staff from the Sala Studio in possession of research tools (inventories or lists) in both hard copy and digital format. The latter can be viewed directly on the computer made available. For those who do not live in Sassari, research can also be done via correspondence, as long as the subject matter is clearly specified.

Archive material can be reproduced using one’s own equipment if previously authorised by the Archive Directorate. It is free of charge if done for personal use, research or for enhancement purposes without profit-making purposes. The reproduction via the Institute’s Laboratory is charged according to the tariffs established in Memo no. 21 of 17 June 2005 from the General Directorate for Archives – Service II.
