{"id":32885,"date":"2023-12-21T11:55:08","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T10:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/monte-san-giovanni\/"},"modified":"2023-12-21T11:55:08","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T10:55:08","slug":"monte-san-giovanni","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/monte-san-giovanni\/","title":{"rendered":"Monte San Giovanni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Monte San Giovanni<\/strong> sits on the edge of the communal land of <strong>Iglesias<\/strong> and <strong>Gonnesa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>geological<\/strong> point of view, the mountain consists of <strong>sedimentary<\/strong> and <strong>metamorphic<\/strong> rocks dating to the <strong>Cambrian<\/strong> period (500 million years ago) and its peak reaches a height of 424 m a.s.l. Precisely because of the age of its rocks, the site was the focus of intense mining activity. Nowadays, the mountain has a large number of caverns, some of them natural others artificial.<\/p>\n<p>Studies about the area have highlighted that the mountain was already <strong>well known in Roman times<\/strong> for its wealth of <strong>metal mines in the subsoil<\/strong>. The main extraction activity started from the mid-1800s onwards. The main extraction products included <strong>silver<\/strong>, <strong>lead<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>zinc<\/strong>. A number of villages for miners were established, like the <strong>Norman Village<\/strong>, and mineral enrichment plants.
