The dam of Santa Chiara<\/strong> represents the old stopbank which gave rise to the artificial basin of Lake Omodeo<\/strong>. It can be found in Ula Tirso<\/strong>, a town in Barigadu<\/strong>, in central Sardinia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was built between 1918 and 1924, along the river Tirso<\/strong>, leading to the creation of the lake which takes its name from the engineer who designed the dam, Angelo Omodeo<\/strong>. The work, at that time considered colossal, lead to the creation of the largest basin in Europe<\/strong>. Standing 70 metres high, it was the tallest dam in the world<\/strong> for a long time.<\/p>\n

Its construction had a significant impact on the surrounding<\/strong> environment. Indeed, in conjunction with the advancement of the works, the ancient Medieval hamlet of Zuri<\/strong> upstream was dismantled and rebuilt. The ancient Romanesque church of San Pietro<\/strong> was also dismantled and re-built together with the hamlet. The church dates back to the end of 1200 and was built using a particular red trachyte rock<\/strong>. The lake\u2019s water partly submerges the petrified wood of Zuri \u2013 Soddi<\/strong> as well as the pre-Nuragic settlement of Serra Linta<\/strong>, some tombs of Giants<\/strong> and domus de janas<\/strong><\/em>. The submerged heritage re-emerges sometimes when the basin\u2019s level drops in warmer weather.<\/p>\n

From a naturalistic<\/strong> point of view, the lake\u2019s shores mainly feature forest formations<\/strong> of holm oak<\/strong>, downy oak<\/strong> and Mediterranean shrub<\/strong>. You can also observe specimens of white poplar<\/strong>, crack willow<\/strong>, ulmus minor<\/strong>, ash trees<\/strong>, salt cedars<\/strong> and bay tree<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The area has a wealth of both seasonal and migratory birds. Some of the species that can be spotted include the European roller<\/strong>, the Eurasian stone-curlew<\/strong>, the peregrine falcon<\/strong>, the osprey<\/strong> and the common sandpiper<\/strong>. The presence of the lake brought with it a number of aquatic species including the northern pintail<\/strong>, the common pochard<\/strong>, the northern<\/strong> shoveler<\/strong>, the Eurasian teal<\/strong>, the Eurasian wigeon<\/strong>, the coots<\/strong>, the common morhen<\/strong>, the mallard<\/strong>, the gadwall<\/strong>, the Greylag goose<\/strong>, the little egret<\/strong>, the great egret<\/strong> and the grey heron<\/strong>.
\nAlso visible in the area are amphibians<\/strong> and reptiles<\/strong>, including toads<\/strong>, the European pond turtle
\n<\/strong> and the Hermann’s tortoise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1997, after confirmation that there were\u00a0structural failures<\/strong> in the old dam, a second dam was built further south, in the area of Busachi<\/strong>, named after Eleonora d’Arborea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, the old dam has become the ideal spot for a panoramic stop-off on the lake.
