{"id":32806,"date":"2023-12-19T17:06:36","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T16:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/costa-di-capo-marargiu\/"},"modified":"2023-12-19T17:06:36","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T16:06:36","slug":"costa-di-capo-marargiu","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/costa-di-capo-marargiu\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa di Capo Marargiu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Capo Marargiu<\/strong> is a promontory on the <strong>north-western coast<\/strong> of <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, in the town of <strong>Bosa<\/strong>. This stretch of coastline is also well known as <strong>Costa dei Grifoni<\/strong>, thanks to the very rare specimens of griffins which nest there.<\/p>\n<p>The coast has a number of different <strong>small coves<\/strong>, not always easy to reach, accessible along <strong>pathways immersed in the Mediterranean shrub<\/strong>. The coves alternate with <strong>cliffs<\/strong> and <strong>dark red<\/strong> <strong>trachyte reefs<\/strong>, contrasting with the <strong>clear and transparent sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Porto Managu<\/strong> is one of the most well-known coves. This is an unusual inlet with a <strong>very fine, clear sandy beach<\/strong> which, due to coastal storms, often disappears, allowing the stretch of <strong>trachyte pebbles<\/strong> below, to emerge. The small, dark trachyte <strong>island<\/strong> of the same name emerges from the sea to a height of 30 m a.s.l., at about 40 metres from the coastline.<\/p>\n<p>The coast is also well known for its numerous <strong>Caves of Capo Marargiu<\/strong>. Indeed, the reef is full of different <strong>caverns<\/strong>, created by the erosion of the sea on pre-existing fractures in the trachyte. Some of them overlook the sea and are accessible by boat, while others open up a few metres back, probably created by the action of sea storms during geological periods in which the sea level was higher.<\/p>\n<p>The area falls within the perimeter of the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) &#8220;<strong>Hinterland and coastal area between Bosa, Capo Marargiu and Porto Tangone<\/strong>&#8221; (ITB020041).<br \/>\nIn the SCI, already a <strong>Special Conservation Area<\/strong> (ZSC), one of the largest <strong>colonies of griffins<\/strong> has made its nest. In addition to these, several other important species have nested here, including the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, <strong>Bonelli\u2019s eagle<\/strong>, the <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong>, <strong>Audouin&#8217;s gull<\/strong>, the <strong>common kingfisher<\/strong> and the <strong>royal kite<\/strong>. In the past, in some of the caverns along the coastline, there have been sightings of the <strong>Mediterranean monk seal<\/strong>, but there has never been full confirmation of its presence there.<\/p>\n<p>Another well-known place in the area is the <strong>Monte Sas Bagassas<\/strong>, an isolated panoramic hill, almost in the centre of the promontory of <strong>Capo Marargiu<\/strong>.
