It spreads across <strong>Supramonte<\/strong>, from the first buttresses of the <strong>Gennargentu massif<\/strong>, to the high <strong>valley of the Cedrino<\/strong>, as far as the <strong>rio Flumineddu<\/strong>, which is its eastern border.<\/p>\n<p>The forestry area has typically Mediterranean <strong>climatic conditions<\/strong> with <strong>rainfall<\/strong> mainly in the <strong>autumn-winter<\/strong> period.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>geological<\/strong> point of view, the area mainly consists of <strong>Mesozoic limestone<\/strong>. These show particular <strong>signs of erosion<\/strong> thanks also to the presence of <strong>surface water<\/strong> and numerous springs. Some of the most important ones include the <strong>Funtana Bona spring<\/strong> from where the flow of the <strong>River Cedrino<\/strong> begins.<\/p>\n<p>The flora is <strong>dominated by the presence of holm oak<\/strong>. Indeed, the forest hosts a <strong>holm oak wood spanning back centuries<\/strong>, known as <strong>Sas Baddes<\/strong>, and considered <strong>one of a kind in the Mediterranean<\/strong> for size and characteristics. It covers around 1,000 hectares with trees standing 20-25 metres tall, a jewel in the crown of the state-owned forest and one of the <strong>oldest and largest holm oak woods in Europe<\/strong>. The forest is also home to <strong>maple<\/strong>, <strong>holly<\/strong>, <strong>strawberry trees<\/strong>, <strong>phillyrea<\/strong> and <strong>English yew<\/strong>. <strong>Peonies <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>wild roses of the Gennargentu<\/strong> pop up from the undergrowth.<\/p>\n<p>The forest is a <strong>protective oasis for fauna<\/strong> and home to a number of species. The <strong>mouflon<\/strong> is considered symbol of Montes having slotted in perfectly with the forest\u2019s <em>habitat<\/em>. The most commonly encountered species is the <strong>boar<\/strong>, as is clear from the numerous &#8220;<strong>plowings<\/strong>&#8221; which they leave in their trail. The forest is also home to the <strong>wild cat<\/strong>, the <strong>marten<\/strong>, the <strong>garden dormouse<\/strong> and the <strong>dormouse<\/strong>. The outskirts of the forest, on the other hand, are home to the <strong>hare<\/strong>, the <strong>wild rabbit<\/strong>\u00a0and the <strong>fox<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The birds include the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, <strong>goshawk<\/strong>, <strong>common raven<\/strong>, <strong>Sardinian hooded crow<\/strong>, <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong>, <strong>kestrel<\/strong>, <strong>sparrowhawk<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>partridge<\/strong> and <strong>wood pigeon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Walking through the forest, you can admire a number of <strong>significant nature elements<\/strong> such as the <strong>natural monument<\/strong> of <strong>Monte Novo San Giovanni<\/strong>. This can be reached along an <strong>ancient road<\/strong> and offers a view of 70-metre peaks, where <strong>different endemic floral varieties<\/strong> grow.<\/p>\n<p>Still famous to this day is <strong>Campu su Mudrecu<\/strong>, an almost bare <strong>karstic plateau<\/strong> due to a <strong>fire<\/strong> which destroyed an entire <strong>juniper forest<\/strong> in the 1930s. It is easy to catch a glimpse of large <strong>herds of mouflons<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campu su Disterru<\/strong>, an extensive <strong>karstic plateau<\/strong> partly covered by a <strong>centuries-old holm oak<\/strong> forest, where the <strong>karstic chasm<\/strong> of the same name can be found and with an oval-shaped opening.<\/p>\n<p>In the areas near the springs, it is easy to find <strong>sheep pens<\/strong> characterised by \u201c<strong><em>pinnetos<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, shepherds\u2019 shelters built with stone and cone-shaped roof made with branches. <strong>Ruins from the Nuragic age<\/strong> are also visible: the <strong>village of sas Baddes<\/strong>, part of the holm oak wood, two <strong>tombs of giants<\/strong>, near the <strong>sa Senepida valley<\/strong>, and, at the heart of the forest, the <strong>Mereu Nuraghe<\/strong>, built using blocks of <strong>white limestone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The entire area of the complex falls within a protected area pursuant to Royal Decree no. 3267\/1923 and Law 991\/52 and was declared<strong> a permanently protected fauna oasis<\/strong> in a decree from the Environmental Protection Department 139\/79 and part of the area of the <strong>Site of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) \u201c<strong>Supramonte di Oliena, Orgosolo e Urzulei &#8211; Su Sercone<\/strong>\u201d (ITB002212).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":27382,"template":"","tipologia":[1034],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-30107","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-forest","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Foresta di Montes - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/foresta-di-montes\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Foresta di Montes - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The State-owned Montes Forest lies in the municipality of Orgosolo and extends across a surface area of around 4,586 hectares.
