It extends for 1,470 hectares, bordering with the <strong>Forest of Pantaleo<\/strong> to the south and with the <strong>Forest of Gutturu Mannu<\/strong> and the <strong>Monte Arcosu<\/strong> Reserve to the east.<\/p>\n<p>In the nineteenth century, a significant part of the land was given over to exploiting <strong>the forest<\/strong> for the production of railway sleepers. The rest of the land was used by the local population for <strong>farming<\/strong> and <strong>breeding<\/strong>, as well as a few <strong>mining settlements<\/strong>. This led to <strong>excessive exploitation<\/strong> of the land with <strong>grazing<\/strong>, <strong>fires<\/strong>, <strong>wood cutting for fires<\/strong>, <strong>coal<\/strong> and <strong>poaching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the early years of the twentieth century, the expropriation of a large surface area started the slow <strong>process of reviving the forestry heritage<\/strong> and <strong>re-stocking fauna<\/strong>. The former ERSAT regional body then purchased a large part of the forest in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The highest peak in the area is the <strong>Punta is Caravius<\/strong> (1,116 m a.s.l.) followed by <strong>Monte Tiriccu<\/strong> (1,104 m a.s.l.). These dominate the forest with their <strong>rocks<\/strong> of <strong>granite<\/strong>, <strong>porphyritic <\/strong>or <strong>metamorphic<\/strong> origin.<\/p>\n<p>Various rivers flow through the forest, including the <strong>rio Barisone<\/strong> and <strong>rio Tiriccu<\/strong>. Both are tributaries of the <strong>rio Mannu<\/strong>, which ends its course in the artificial <strong>Bau Pressiu<\/strong> Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>The vegetation is typically <strong>Mediterranean forestry<\/strong>, with the presence of numerous <strong>endemic species<\/strong>. In particular, we find the <strong>holm oak<\/strong>, in different parts of the <strong>centuries-old forest<\/strong>, as well as <strong>strawberry tree<\/strong>, <strong>mastic tree<\/strong>, <strong>phillyrea<\/strong> and <strong>juniper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bird<\/strong> species include the <strong>Goshawk<\/strong>, the <strong>buzzard<\/strong>, the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, the <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong>, the <strong>Sardinian partridge <\/strong>and the <strong>common raven<\/strong>. On the ground, on the other hand, we find the <strong>Sardinian hare<\/strong>, the <strong>wild rabbit<\/strong>, the <strong>fox<\/strong>, the <strong>weasel<\/strong>, the <strong>boar<\/strong> and the <strong>Sardinian deer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The forest has <strong>two shelters<\/strong>, used by Tuscan <strong>rangers<\/strong> who exploited the forest to build the railway ties.
