{"id":30010,"date":"2023-09-15T11:30:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/san-giovanni-di-sinis\/"},"modified":"2023-11-06T10:35:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T09:35:11","slug":"san-giovanni-di-sinis","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/san-giovanni-di-sinis\/","title":{"rendered":"San Giovanni di Sinis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>beach of San Giovanni di Sinis<\/strong>, lies in the <strong>peninsula of Sinis<\/strong>, in the municipal district of <strong>Cabras<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Oristano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>stretch of shoreline<\/strong> extends for around two kilometres from the <strong>promontory of the Torre di San Giovanni<\/strong> as far as <strong>Funtana Meiga<\/strong>, alternating <strong>sandy stretches <\/strong>with<strong> a rocky coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The actual <strong>beach of San Giovanni<\/strong> lies in the <strong>western sector<\/strong> at the base of the <strong>Sinis peninsula<\/strong>, right behind the promontory of the <strong>Torre di San Giovanni<\/strong>, <strong>a Spanish tower<\/strong>, built on the wishes of <strong>Filippo II<\/strong>, between 1580 and 1610, to combat <strong>pirate invasions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the opposite part of the peninsula, we find the <strong>ruins of the ancient city of Tharros<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>firstly a Phoenician-Punic colony<\/strong> then a <strong>Roman<\/strong> one.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>shoreline<\/strong> is covered in <strong>grey, large-grain sand<\/strong>, interspersed by <strong>sandstone and basalt rocks and cliffs<\/strong>. The seabeds are mainly sandy with rocks sticking out in the northern sector.<\/p>\n<p>The scenery around the beach is rich both from a <strong>nature<\/strong>, <strong>historical<\/strong> and <strong>archaeological<\/strong> point of view. There are, in fact, different <strong>rupiculous and bush plant species<\/strong>, which grow on the <strong>promontory<\/strong> and on the <strong>dunes<\/strong> around the beach.
