{"id":30003,"date":"2023-09-15T11:30:17","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/laguna-di-santa-gilla\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T13:06:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T11:06:13","slug":"laguna-di-santa-gilla","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/laguna-di-santa-gilla\/","title":{"rendered":"Laguna di Santa Gilla"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Santa Gilla Lagoon<\/strong> lies on the southern coast of the island, between the municipalities of <strong>Cagliari<\/strong>, <strong>Elmas<\/strong>, <strong>Assemini<\/strong> and <strong>Capoterra<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe area is known as <strong>Stagno di Cagliari<\/strong> which includes the whole <strong>wetlands<\/strong> of the <strong>Saline di Macchiareddu<\/strong>, <strong>Porto Canale<\/strong>, the <strong>Stagno di Capoterra<\/strong> and<strong> Sa Illetta<\/strong>, formerly the <strong>Isola di San Simone<\/strong>, joined to dry land in the XVI century.<\/p>\n<p>This is an area of exceptional <strong>natural importance<\/strong> which stretches over <strong>15,000 hectares<\/strong>. The lagoon basin extends over the ancient valley floor, dug from the <strong>Rio Flumini Mannu<\/strong> and from the <strong>Cixerri River<\/strong>, filled with <strong>fluvial deposits<\/strong>, <strong>swamps<\/strong> and <strong>marines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The lagoon has been the subject of different <strong>anthropic activities<\/strong> over the years, and part of its area is currently included in the urban and industrial built-up area of the municipalities involved.<br \/>\nFurthermore, due to its <strong>strategic position<\/strong>, part of the lagoon was transformed into a port <strong><em>hub<\/em><\/strong> (Porto Canale), leading to further <strong>alterations in the ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite these changes, the <strong>natural system<\/strong> of the lagoon rapidly adapted. Its embankments are now the <strong><em>natural<\/em> habitat<\/strong> of almost <strong>two hundred species of birds<\/strong>. These include <strong>70 species<\/strong> which have been identified as <strong>nonmigratory<\/strong>. The lagoon hosts <strong>herons<\/strong>, <strong>ducks<\/strong>, <strong>barn owls<\/strong>, <strong>black-winged stilts<\/strong>, <strong>falcons<\/strong>, <strong>seagulls<\/strong>, <strong>cormorants<\/strong>, <strong>the common kingfisher<\/strong> and <strong>pink flamingos<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis is why the area is protected and classified as a <strong>Special Protection Area<\/strong> (SPA) under the <strong>European Union\u2019s<\/strong> \u201c<strong>Birds Directive<\/strong>\u201d and as an internationally recognised wetland pursuant to the <strong>Ramsar Convention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Around the lagoon, there are different <strong>points dedicated to <em>birdwatching<\/em><\/strong>, especially along the trunk road, S.S.195 which runs along the side of the <strong>Stagno di Capoterra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as its <strong>environmental and natural importance<\/strong>, the lagoon is of significant <strong>historical importance<\/strong>. Indeed, the human settlements verified in the area, date to the <strong>VIII century B.C<\/strong>. The first centre of the <strong>Carthaginian Carales<\/strong>, a trade and fishing centre, was established precisely in this area. In the <strong>Roman era,<\/strong> it became a suburb of <strong>Karalis<\/strong>. in the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, <strong>Santa Igia<\/strong>, became the capital of the <strong>Giudicate of Calari<\/strong> and <strong>episcopal see<\/strong>. Ships from the Maritime Republics accessed the city via the mouth of the lagoon.
