{"id":30001,"date":"2023-09-15T11:30:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/monte-albo\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T13:06:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T11:06:12","slug":"monte-albo","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/monte-albo\/","title":{"rendered":"Monte Albo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Monte Albo<\/strong> (in Sardinian<em><strong>Monti Arvu<\/strong><\/em>) is a massif falling mainly within the areas of <strong>Lula<\/strong> and <strong>Siniscola<\/strong> and partially those of <strong>Galtell\u00ec<\/strong>, <strong>Irgoli<\/strong>, <strong>Loculi<\/strong> and <strong>Lod\u00e8<\/strong>. The area is part of the historical region of the <strong>Baron\u00ece<\/strong>, in <strong>central-eastern Sardinia<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Nuoro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Monte<\/strong> takes its name from the <strong>clear limestone rocks<\/strong> and it has a long <strong>ridge<\/strong>, extending for around <strong>twenty kilometres<\/strong>, with an average height of more than <strong>1,000 m a.s.l<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIts highest peaks are <strong>Punta Turudd\u00f2<\/strong> and <strong>Punta Catirina<\/strong>, both at a height of <strong>1,127 m a.s.l<\/strong>. The <strong>karstic sinkhole<\/strong> known as <strong>Sa Tumba &#8216;e Nurai<\/strong> can be found between the two peaks. In addition to this, under <strong>P.ta Catirinia<\/strong> the <strong>cave<\/strong> of <strong>Janna Manna<\/strong>, stretching for <strong>200 metres<\/strong>, opens up.<br \/>\nRich in <strong>gorges<\/strong> and <strong>caverns<\/strong>, <strong>vertical walls<\/strong> and deep <strong>ravines<\/strong>, the <strong>Monte Albo<\/strong> is referred to as the \u201c<em><strong>Sardinian Dolomites<\/strong><\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Monte is a <strong>natural habitat<\/strong> for the <strong>mouflon<\/strong>, the <strong>boar<\/strong>, the <strong>marten<\/strong> and <strong>wild cat<\/strong>. Birds worth mentioning include the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, the <strong>Goshawk<\/strong>, the <strong>common raven<\/strong> and the rare <strong>red-billed chough<\/strong>. Also found here is the <strong>endemic amphibian<\/strong>, the <strong>Monte Albo cave salamander<\/strong> (<em>Stefani&#8217;s salamander<\/em>, 1969).<\/p>\n<p>Its flora includes <strong>rare shrubs<\/strong> like the <strong>king\u2019s spear<\/strong> and various <strong>endemisms<\/strong> like <strong>bluebells<\/strong>, <strong>sweet rocket<\/strong>, <strong>long-toothed lettuce<\/strong>, <strong>lavender cotton<\/strong> and <strong>wild hop<\/strong>. For this particular species, the <strong>Italian Botanical Society<\/strong> added <strong>Monte Albo<\/strong> to its list of places of <strong>national interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This area has been inhabited by humans since ancient times and its caves have often been used as shelters. <strong>Iron swords<\/strong> and <strong>daggers<\/strong> were found in the one known as <strong>Bona Fraule<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHumans inhabited the mountain from as early as <strong>Neolithic times<\/strong>, as is clear from the <em><strong>domu de Janas<\/strong> <\/em>of <strong>Mannu \u2018e Gruris<\/strong>. There are also various <strong>Nuragic<\/strong> remains like the <strong>Nuraghe Littu Ertiches<\/strong>.
