The Park spreads across the hill of the same name (98 m a.s.l.), one of the seven hills where <strong>Sardinia\u2019s<\/strong> capital stands, between the <strong>natural park of Molentargius-Saline<\/strong> and the <strong>hill of Bonaria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Its name \u201c<em><strong>Urpinu<\/strong><\/em>\u201d refers to the presence of the now non-existent <strong>colony of foxes<\/strong> which roamed the area in ancient times.<em><strong>Urpinu<\/strong><\/em>, in Campidanese Sardinian means \u201c<strong>fox<\/strong>\u201d. The hill has cultivated a <strong>wilderness<\/strong> for centuries, inhabited by <strong>foxes<\/strong> and other <strong>wild species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area was owned by the <strong>Sanjust di Teulada family<\/strong> who, in the<strong>1800s<\/strong>, launched the <strong>first reforestation<\/strong> with specimens of <strong>Aleppo pines<\/strong>. At the same time, the first restoration began of the <strong>Aragonese church<\/strong>, originally built between the XVII and XVIII centuries, on the ruins of a small <strong>Byzantine sanctuary<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn the <strong>1930s,<\/strong> part of the area was the centre of <strong>military activity<\/strong>. The <strong>Airforce<\/strong> built a <strong>fuel depot<\/strong>, later expanded in the 1980s. The fuel tanks were linked via pipelines to the port and airports of Decimomannu and Elmas. Only in 2007 was the depot definitively decommissioned.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1939,<\/strong> the area of the hills fell under the administration of <strong>Cagliari\u2019s city council<\/strong> and it established the <strong>city\u2019s first urban park<\/strong>. However, as well as the areas which remained under military control, part of the hill remained designated to the <strong>limestone quarry<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn the <strong>1980s,<\/strong> the council started <strong>important upgrading work on the park<\/strong>, with <strong>reforestation<\/strong>, <strong>management work<\/strong> and <strong>the cordoning off of the area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The most common <strong>botanical species<\/strong>, not all of them spontaneous but adapted to the climate and the city\u2019s soils, include the <strong>Aleppo pine<\/strong>, the <strong>wild olive<\/strong>, the <strong>carob<\/strong>, the <strong>holm oak<\/strong>, the <strong>mastic tree<\/strong>, the <strong>euphorbia<\/strong> <strong>dendroides<\/strong>, the<strong>atriplex halimus<br \/>\n<\/strong>, the <strong>rhamnus alaternus<\/strong>, the <strong>phillyrea<\/strong>, the <strong>hackberry <\/strong>and the <strong>Canary Island pine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park also has <strong>artificial lakes<\/strong> which are the <em><strong>habitat<\/strong><\/em> for numerous <strong>species of bird and amphibian<\/strong>. You\u2019ll be able to spot <strong>swans<\/strong>, <strong>common morhen<\/strong>, <strong>mallards<\/strong>, <strong>geese<\/strong>, <strong>tree frogs<\/strong> and <strong>turtles<\/strong>. One unusual feature about the park is its incredibly colourful collection of <strong>peacocks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area also offers a <strong>network of pathways<\/strong>, useful for those who enjoy outdoor sports or simply for a walk. There is also <strong>gym equipment<\/strong>, a large <strong>kids\u2019 play area<\/strong> and <strong>picnic tables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park currently extends for <strong>350,000 square metres<\/strong> including the <strong>panoramic Viale Europa<\/strong> with its <strong>Belvedere<\/strong> and a <strong>small kiosk<\/strong>. From here, you have a view <strong>of the entire city<\/strong>. To the south-east, the view covers the <strong>Golfo degli Angeli<\/strong>, with the <strong>Sella del Diavolo<\/strong>, the <strong>Stagno di Molentargius <\/strong>and the <strong>Saline<\/strong> and <strong>Spiaggia del Poetto<\/strong>. To the north-west, the <strong>Castello di San Michele<\/strong>, on the hill of the same name, and the <strong>historical neighbourhoods of Villanova <\/strong>and <strong>Castello<\/strong>.
