{"id":29999,"date":"2023-09-15T11:30:15","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/area-marina-protetta-capo-carbonara\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T13:06:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T11:06:12","slug":"area-marina-protetta-capo-carbonara","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/area-marina-protetta-capo-carbonara\/","title":{"rendered":"Area Marina Protetta Capo Carbonara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Capo Carbonara protected marine area<\/strong> is a <strong>protected nature site<\/strong> within the municipality of <strong>Villasimius<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The protected marine area lies to the <strong>south-east of Sardinia<\/strong>, in the <strong>Tyrrhenian Sea<\/strong> area extending from <strong>Capo Boi<\/strong> as far as the <strong>Isola di Serpentara<\/strong> opposite, and includes the <strong>Capo Carbonara<\/strong> promontory and the <strong>Isola dei Cavoli<\/strong>, for a total surface area of <strong>14,360 hectares<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area also includes the <strong>shallows of Berni<\/strong> (in the area of sea opposite Villasimius, between the Isola dei Cavoli and the Isola Serpentara), t<strong>he shallows of Mezzo<\/strong> and <strong>of Libeccio<\/strong> (to the south of the Isola dei Cavoli), the <strong>shallows of Santa Caterina<\/strong> to the west of the cove of the same name and the <strong>shallows of Pescatelli<\/strong> in the area of sea opposite <strong>Porto Sa Ruxi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The AMP is the third largest marine area in Sardinia and is split into <strong>four areas<\/strong>, with different levels of protection: <strong>Zone A (full reserve)<\/strong>, <strong>Zone B (general reserve)<\/strong>, <strong>Zone C (partial reserve)<\/strong> and <strong>Zone D (experimental reserve)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area\u2019s seabeds are home to a vast <strong>Posidonia oceanica meadow<\/strong> which is the natural <em>habitat<\/em> for different specimens of <em><strong>Pinna nobilis<\/strong><\/em>, more commonly known as \u201c<strong>the fan mussel<\/strong>\u201d. In the underwater parts of the promontories between the typical <strong>granite rocks<\/strong> of this part of Sardinia, we can spot <strong>Alcyonacea<\/strong> and <strong>sea daffodils<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Types of <strong>algae<\/strong> found in the area include the <em><strong>Cystoseira<\/strong><\/em>. This plays an <strong>important role<\/strong> in the Mediterranean coastal-marine ecological system, so much so, that it has earned the title of \u201c<strong>ecosystem builder<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ban on fishing has allowed the waters in the entire area to restock over the years. Indeed, all <strong>Mediterranean fish species<\/strong> can be found here, in particular: <strong>wrasses<\/strong>, <strong>porgies<\/strong>, <strong>serranidae<\/strong>, <strong>congridae<\/strong>, <strong>Moray eels<\/strong> and <strong>carangidae<\/strong>. It is not uncommon to encounter a school of <strong>saddled seabream<\/strong>, <strong>dreamfish<\/strong> and <strong>damselfish<\/strong>. The <strong>barracuda<\/strong>, <strong>greater amberjack<\/strong> and <strong>common dentex<\/strong> can also be found in all the shallows. <strong>Grouper<\/strong> and <strong>corvina<\/strong> will approach those scuba diving or come inshore.<\/p>\n<p>It is also not uncommon to spot specimens of <strong>dolphins<\/strong>, especially in the early hours of the morning and at sunset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deep-sea fishing is off-limits<\/strong> in all zones. In <strong>Zone A<\/strong>, the area with the highest protection level, both swimming and sailing are banned. In the other zones, however, <strong>scuba diving<\/strong> with SCBA is permitted, after receiving permission from AMP management or if accompanied by authorised operators.<\/p>\n<p>Scuba diving has a strong appeal both from a <strong>nature point of view<\/strong> and from an <strong>archaeological and anthropological<\/strong> viewpoint. Indeed, there are numerous <strong>shipwrecks<\/strong> in the area from various periods of history, from <strong>Roman galleys<\/strong> to <strong>Spanish sailing ships<\/strong>, right up to <strong>modern crafts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other important <strong>protected sites<\/strong> fall within AMP such as: the <strong>Site of Community Interest<\/strong> (SCI) \u201c<strong>Isola dei Cavoli, Serpentara, Punta Molentis e Campulongu<\/strong>\u201d and the <strong>Special Protection Areas<\/strong> (SPA) of \u201c<strong>Capo Carbonara e stagno di Notteri &#8211; Punta Molentis<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Isola dei Cavoli<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Isola Serpentara<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Capo Carbonara Protected Area<\/strong> takes its name from the promontory of the same name.\u00a0The small town of <strong>Carbonara<\/strong>, or rather \u201c<em><strong>Crabonaxa<\/strong><\/em>\u201d, only became <strong>Villasimius<\/strong> in 1862. Its original name was linked to the intense activity of <strong>exploiting charcoal<\/strong> which was practised in this area in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Down through the centuries, these coastlines have always been a strategic area for maritime traffic control.
