It is part of the\u00a0<strong>Gennargentu Massif<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>Arzana<\/strong>, on the border with the municipality of <strong>Desulo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>geology<\/strong> of the area is characterised by <strong>rocks from the Palaeozoic era<\/strong>, mostly <strong>phyllites<\/strong> (metamorphic rocks), followed by <strong>granite<\/strong> (igneous rock) to the north and <strong>sandstone<\/strong> (sedimentary rock) towards the east.<\/p>\n<p>The peak is round and has almost no vegetation. The slopes are partially covered in unusual <strong>herbaceous<\/strong> and <strong>bush vegetation<\/strong> and are conditioned by the cold climate in the area.\u00a0This <strong>harsh climate<\/strong> opened the way to the formation of a <strong>typical mountainous flora<\/strong>. The most common species is the <strong>dwarf juniper<\/strong> with different other similar species (e.g. <strong>thyme<\/strong>, <strong>Corsica pansy<\/strong>), many of them identified as<strong>\u00a0endemic and rare<\/strong> (e.g. <strong>Lamyropsis microcephala<\/strong>, <strong>peonies<\/strong>). The <strong>forest vegetation<\/strong> comes from the <strong>decidious<\/strong> oak forest (e.g. <strong>downy oak<\/strong> and <strong>holly<\/strong>). Occasionally, you may also find <strong>English yew<\/strong>, as is the case on the western slope of <strong>Su S\u00f9ssiu.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fauna includes the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong> and <strong>mouflon<\/strong>, whose <strong>natural habitat<\/strong> is these mountains.<\/p>\n<p>From the peak of <strong>Punta La Marmora<\/strong>, on a clear day, you have a view extending over most of the island, and you\u2019ll even manage to <strong>spot the mountains of Corsica<\/strong> to the north as well as the <strong>hills of Cagliari<\/strong> to the south, and different <strong>stretches of coastline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The peak is named after the general in the royal army, <strong>Alberto La Marmora<\/strong> (1789-1863), who was the first one to establish its height. <strong>La Marmora<\/strong> also described the island in two scientific-literary works: \u201c<strong>Voyage en Sardaigne<\/strong>\u201d (1826) and \u201c<strong>Itin\u00e9raire de l&#8217;\u00eele de Sardaigne<\/strong>\u201d (1860). The origins of the place name, in Sardinian, is \u201c<strong>Perda Crap\u00ecas<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0(<strong>broken<\/strong>, <strong>cracked<\/strong> stones), due to the schist nature of the rocks, which tend to crumble.<\/p>\n<p>The peak can be accessed along hiking trails (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sardegnasentieri.it\/sentieri\/sarena-arcu-gennargentu-t-721\">Gennargentu T-721<\/a>), under the protection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sardegnaforeste.it\/article\/agenzia-regionale-forestas\">FORESTAS<\/a>.
