{"id":29959,"date":"2023-09-15T11:30:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/su-sercone\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T13:06:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T11:06:03","slug":"su-sercone","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/su-sercone\/","title":{"rendered":"Su Sercone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Su Sercone<\/strong> or <strong>Su Suercone<\/strong> is a large <strong>sinkhole<\/strong> of karstic origin found in the municipality of <strong>Orgosolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More precisely, this <strong>Natural Monument<\/strong> lies on the extensive <strong>plateau of Mesozoic limestone<\/strong> which sits at the bottom of the <strong>Supramonte di Orgosolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>geomorphological<\/strong> point of view, the genesis of the sinkhole is associated with the formation process of <strong>karstic caves which developed mainly upwards<\/strong>, known as &#8220;<em>fusoids<\/em>&#8220;. In these kind of morphologies, the erosion processes develop <strong>along the cracks and other gaps in the limestone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The sinkhole has a <strong>funnel shape<\/strong>, with a diameter of about 400 metres. The edge of the depression sits at a height of 884 m a.s.l. while the bottom reaches around 685 m a.s.l. with a <strong>disparity of about 200 metres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, at about 700 m a.s.l., a sub-vertical <strong>ponor<\/strong> opens up which is 30 metres deep and communicates with the vast underground karstic system. This system was probably linked to that of the <strong>Sa Oche<\/strong> and <strong>Su Bentu caves<\/strong>. The descent down to the bottom is made easier by the sinkhole\u2019s morphology.<\/p>\n<p>The origins of the <strong>place name<\/strong> <strong>Su Suercone<\/strong> are unclear. According to some sources, it may derive from the word &#8220;<em><strong>suerca<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;<strong>axil<\/strong>&#8220;) and would therefore mean &#8220;<strong>large axil<\/strong>&#8220;. According to another interpretation, it could mean &#8220;<strong>large cork oak<\/strong>&#8220;, though this is less likely as it is not a plant typically found in this area.\u00a0 The <strong>shepherds of Orgosolo and Urzulei<\/strong> used to call it &#8220;<strong>Su Sellone<\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong>Su Sercone<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The sinkhole and surrounding area were populated as early as the <strong>prehistoric era<\/strong>, and were used as a\u00a0<strong>burial place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being a <strong>Natural Monument<\/strong>, the sinkhole is also part of the <strong>Site of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) &#8220;<strong>Supramonte di Oliena, Orgosolo and Urzulei &#8211; Su Sercone<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0(ITB002212).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":26439,"template":"","tipologia":[1080],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29959","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-karstic-sinkhole-with-ponor","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Su Sercone - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/su-sercone\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Su Sercone - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Su Sercone or Su Suercone is a large sinkhole of karstic origin found in the municipality of Orgosolo.
