{"id":29933,"date":"2023-08-29T14:48:31","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T12:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/grotta-monte-majore\/"},"modified":"2023-08-29T14:48:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T12:48:31","slug":"grotta-monte-majore","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/grotta-monte-majore\/","title":{"rendered":"Grotta Monte Majore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Monte Majore Cave<\/strong> (<em><strong>Sa Korona of Monte Majore<\/strong><\/em> in Sardinian) is a natural cave located in the municipality of <strong>Thiesi<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Sassari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The entrance is not easy to spot and lies on the eastern slope of the mountain of the same name at around 540 m a.s.l. The cave <strong>extends for around 300 metres<\/strong> and has a low, long entrance hidden by a dense forest. The mountain from which the cave takes its name, standing 598 m a.s.l., has a flat crest mainly consisting of <strong>limestone rocks<\/strong> from the<strong> Miocene<\/strong> era.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cave has a large entrance and continues, on the initial stretch, with a short access tunnel, flanked with various rock walls. After passing the first section, you enter a single, <strong>large room<\/strong>, which partially covered the entire cave. At about 100 metres from the entrance, an additional tunnel descends on the left where you can see an unusual <strong>white karstic flow<\/strong> of limestone and a pool of water.<\/p>\n<p>The cave continues with various wells and running water until you reach the end where there is a <strong>pool full of water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The cave is <strong>completely concretionised<\/strong>; inside it is possible to observe an immense <strong>colony<\/strong> of <strong>5,000 bats<\/strong> of <strong>3 important species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Important traces of <strong>prehistoric<\/strong> <strong>existence<\/strong> were also uncovered in the cave.<\/p>\n<p>The area of the <strong>Monte Majore<\/strong> can be reached along the road which leads from <strong>Ittiri<\/strong> to the town of <strong>Romana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":2557,"template":"","tipologia":[1039],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29933","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-cave","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Grotta Monte Majore - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/grotta-monte-majore\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Grotta Monte Majore - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The Monte Majore Cave (Sa Korona of Monte Majore in Sardinian) is a natural cave located in the municipality of Thiesi, in the province of Sassari.
