The surrounding area has numerous shelters under the rocks, artificial cave tombs, Nuraghe and tombs of the giants.

The main elements of the complex include a menhir, split and overturned, and the most important dolmen in the region. Thanks to its size and unusual features, it is one of the most interesting dolmen constructions in the Mediterranean megalithic area.

The dolmen was built using grey-pink tuff trachyte and is 5 m long, 2.50 m wide and 2.70 m tall. It has a rectangular layout with door on the front slab. Its elongated rectangular room is cordoned off by two side orthostates secured into the rock at the base. The orthostates support a large roof slab, weighing around 18 tons. The slab at the back of the dolmen has collapsed but the large fragments of stone used to build it are still visible.

The presence of the front stone door makes the Mores dolmen the only one of its kind recorded on the island. This feature reveals its role as trait d’union between the dolmen structures and the tombs of the giants that followed.
Another feature of the dolmen is the presence of two niches, both inserted into the large orthostatic slab on the left. The external niche was presumably used to place votive offerings to the dead. Another larger niche, dug out on the inside, perhaps housed the burial ground of an important member of community.

At about one hundred metres from the dolmen, you’ll find a menhir, lying on the ground and broken into different stumps. This too was built with carefully carved local tuff trachyte. It originally stood at height of 2.40 m.

In the rocky outcrops around the area, there are also nooks and crannies, niches and shelters, mostly corroded by the atmospheric agents and closed by stones.
These elements reveal a vast burial ground still to be studied around the megalithic complex.

Follow the SS 128 bis trunk road from Mores, towards Bono and Ittireddu. After about 4 km turn right following signs for Sa Coveccada. Continue straight on until you come to a signposted detour on your right. Continue straight on to the end of the road where you’ll find a group of houses on your left and two gates opposite. Open the gates (without forgetting to shut them again) and carry on until you reach the dolmen.

[1043
1025
1029
post-29932","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-dolmen-en","categoria-archaeological-site","tematica-archeology

Complesso archeologico Sa Coveccada - Idese

<meta property="og:description" content="The Sa Coveccada archaeological complex stands in the middle of a volcanic trachyte tableland.
