{"id":29902,"date":"2023-08-21T10:44:37","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T08:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/sa-oche-and-su-bentu\/"},"modified":"2023-08-21T10:44:37","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T08:44:37","slug":"sa-oche-and-su-bentu","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/sa-oche-and-su-bentu\/","title":{"rendered":"Sa Oche and Su Bentu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>caves of Sa Oche and Su Bentu<\/strong> can be found in the <strong>Supramonte di Oliena<\/strong>, near the <strong>Valle del Lanaitto<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Nuoro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The caves of <strong>Sa Oche<\/strong> and <strong>Su Bentu<\/strong>, once believed to be <strong>two separate caves<\/strong>, are part of the same <strong>karstic system<\/strong>.\u00a0The system stretches for around\u00a0<strong>16 kilometres<\/strong> and the two caves are connected to one another through a <strong>siphon<\/strong>. Their name becomes even more characteristic by combining the <strong>Voice<\/strong> (<em><strong>sa oche<\/strong><\/em>) to the <strong>Wind<\/strong> (<em><strong>su bentu<\/strong><\/em>), poetically becoming the &#8220;<strong>Voice of the Wind<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The landscape lying around the entrance to the cave is typical of the <strong>Supramonte<\/strong>, with <strong>high vertical walls of limestone rock<\/strong>. Growing amidst the rock is a <strong>forest and shrub with English yew, maple and centuries-old juniper trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The name <strong>Sa Oche<\/strong> derives from the <strong>loud roars<\/strong> caused by the <strong>floods<\/strong> which engulfed the cave after a storm.<br \/>\nThe cavity opens out at a height of <strong>150 m a.s.l.<\/strong>, in a wide entrance with three lakes and extends for around 400 metres. The section of <strong>Su Bentu<\/strong> can only be accessed by experts with <strong>speleology equipment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sa Oche and Su Bentu&#8217;s<\/strong> karstic system is also crossed by a <strong>river<\/strong> which comes down from the <strong>plateaus of Orgosolo and Urzulei<\/strong> and resurfaces at the <strong>su Gologone springs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The caves preserve their <strong>naturalness<\/strong> with <strong>stalactites<\/strong>, <strong>stalagmites<\/strong>, <strong>tunnels,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>floors<\/strong> covered in <strong>sharp crystals<\/strong>, underground <strong>lakes<\/strong><strong><\/strong> \u200band <strong>quartz sandy beaches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sa Oche and su Bentu<\/strong> are together some of the <strong>largest caves in Europe<\/strong>, attracting <strong>speleology enthusiasts<\/strong> and <strong>researchers<\/strong> who are expert in this subject matter.<\/p>\n<p>The entrance to <strong>Sa Oche<\/strong> is along a <strong>hiking trail<\/strong>, one of many winding across this part of the island, abundant in exceptional nature.<\/p>\n<p>The cave is part of the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) &#8220;<strong>Supramonte di Oliena, Orgosolo and Urzulei &#8211; Su Sercone<\/strong>&#8221; (ITB022212) regulated by <strong>Rete Natura 2000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"template":"","tipologia":[1039],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29902","place","type-place","status-publish","hentry","tipologia-cave","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Sa Oche and Su Bentu - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/sa-oche-and-su-bentu\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Sa Oche and Su Bentu - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The caves of Sa Oche and Su Bentu can be found in the Supramonte di Oliena, near the Valle del Lanaitto, in the province of Nuoro.
