{"id":29877,"date":"2023-08-18T12:13:26","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/the-church-of-the-madonna-della-solitudine\/"},"modified":"2023-08-18T12:13:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:13:26","slug":"the-church-of-the-madonna-della-solitudine","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/the-church-of-the-madonna-della-solitudine\/","title":{"rendered":"The Church of the Madonna della Solitudine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The church sits on a slope at the foot of <strong>Monte Ortobene<\/strong>, in an area on the edge of the city intended as parkland.<\/p>\n<p>It replaced the <strong>rural church <\/strong>dating from <strong>1625<\/strong>, named after the Madonna Addolorata, so cherished by the people of Nuoro that they would gather there for the feasts dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The writer, <strong>Grazia Deledda<\/strong> (1871-1936) dedicated her last<strong> book<\/strong> of the same name to the rural church; nowadays her remains are buried in the building.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, in <strong>1959<\/strong>, in anticipation of the transfer of the writer\u2019s remains buried in the monumental cemetery of Verano in Roma, the church\u2019s renovation work was finished from a <strong>project<\/strong> by the artist <strong>Giovanni Ciusa Romagna<\/strong> (1907-1958).<\/p>\n<p>The project involved replacing the seventeenth-century building, by then in terrible condition, with a construction identical to the <strong>original layout<\/strong>. Indeed, the current church is arranged into a<strong> single hall<\/strong> which ends in an <strong>apse<\/strong> and is <strong>articulated<\/strong> by a series of six <strong>arches<\/strong> either side.
