Built between <strong>1846<\/strong> and <strong>1853<\/strong> from a project by the architect and monk <strong>Antonio Cano<\/strong>, it replaced the previous church of Santa Maria Maggiore; the latter, in fact, was regarded as being too small to be a cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Its <strong>neoclassic<\/strong> <strong>style facade<\/strong> stands between two square-shaped <strong>bell towers<\/strong> while <strong>monumental Ionic half columns<\/strong> divide it into transoms. The facade is rounded off with an <strong>indented<\/strong> <strong>gable<\/strong> with Mary\u2019s emblem. The access <strong>portals<\/strong> the transoms open out, the largest being the central one, and a <strong>lunette<\/strong> provides light to the inside.<\/p>\n<p>The expansive interior has a barrel-vaulted <strong>single nave<\/strong> off of which open out three<strong> apse chapels<\/strong> each side, which are interconnecting.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral\u2019s works include the eighteenth-century sculptures of the <em><strong>Dormitio Virginis<\/strong><\/em> most likely originating from the ancient church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the seventeenth century sculpture of San Giovanni Battista and the twentieth century canvases produced by <strong>Giovanni Ciusa Romagna<\/strong> (1907-1958) and <strong>Carmelo Floris<\/strong> (1891-1960) dedicated to the <strong>Via Crucis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"template":"","tipologia":[989],"categoria":[1023],"tematica":[1030],"class_list":["post-29873","place","type-place","status-publish","hentry","tipologia-cattedrale-en","categoria-architectural-asset","tematica-architecture"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Santa Maria della Neve Cathedral - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/santa-maria-della-neve-cathedral\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Santa Maria della Neve Cathedral - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The monumental building dedicated to the patron saint of Nuoro overlooks a large square in the city\u2019s historical town centre.
