{"id":29854,"date":"2023-08-18T12:13:22","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/badde-salighes-forest\/"},"modified":"2023-08-18T12:13:22","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:13:22","slug":"badde-salighes-forest","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/badde-salighes-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Badde Salighes Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the countryside of the municipality of <strong>Bolotana<\/strong>, on the plateau of <strong>Marghine<\/strong>, the Welsh engineer <strong>Benjamin Piercy<\/strong> (1827-1888), built a villa and adjacent park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Piercy<\/strong> arrived in <strong>Sardinia<\/strong> in <strong>1863<\/strong> to design the <strong>railway network<\/strong>. As well as his main job, he dedicated his life to a model <strong>farming venture<\/strong> in what was once known as <strong>the Badd\u2019e Salighe Estate (Valle dei Salici) and Padru Mannu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Villa Piercy <\/strong>was built in perfect <strong>English colonial style<\/strong>, between 1880 and 1883. The<strong> Park,<\/strong> and integral part of the forest, was created following the design criteria of an <strong>English garden.<\/strong> It is currently a huge <strong>natural oasis<\/strong> of around <strong>40 hectares<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of <strong>native species in the forest<\/strong> such as <strong>Montpellier maple<\/strong>, <strong>English yew<\/strong>, <strong>holly<\/strong>, <strong>chestnut<\/strong>, <strong>holm oak<\/strong> and <strong>downy oak<\/strong>. However, Piercy was a great botanical lover and enthusiast, and experimented with planting <strong>\u201cexotic\u201d<\/strong> species, of different origins such as the <strong>oriental Tuja<\/strong>, <strong>spruce from Spain<\/strong>, <strong>Cephalonia<\/strong> and the <strong>Caucasus<\/strong>, <strong>Lawson cypress<\/strong>, <strong>Balearic boxwood<\/strong> and<strong> California incense cedar<\/strong>. It is this species of <strong>cedar<\/strong> profiling the picturesque <strong>tree-lined avenue<\/strong> leading to the villa.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a <strong>sawmill<\/strong> in the area to produce chestnut wood sleepers for the railway lines under construction. This work involved a great deal of felling. This is why Piercy planted numerous <strong>reforestation nurseries,<\/strong> covering a total of <strong>340 hectares<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>geology<\/strong> of the area is characterised by the presence of different kinds of <\/strong>volcanic rocks<strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Only in <strong>1953,\u00a0<\/strong>ten years after the death of Piercy\u2019s last heir was the forest area partially handed over to the <strong>municipality of Bolotana<\/strong>, following a long legal battle<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For his work in favour of Sardinia, <strong>King Umberto I<\/strong> honoured Piercy with the title of <strong>Commendatore della Corona d\u2019Italia<\/strong>.
