{"id":29843,"date":"2023-08-16T14:38:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T12:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/lago-baratz\/"},"modified":"2023-08-16T14:38:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T12:38:05","slug":"lago-baratz","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/lago-baratz\/","title":{"rendered":"Lago Baratz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lake Baratz<\/strong> can be found in the municipality of <strong>Sassari<\/strong>, in northern Sardinia, near the <strong>hamlets of Villa Assunta<\/strong> and <strong>Santa Maria La Palma<\/strong> in the municipality of <strong>Alghero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For years it was considered the only <strong>natural lake in Sardinia<\/strong>. Recent studies have classified <strong>Lake Forru<\/strong> (Portoscuso, SU) as the \u201csecond\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>The lake is little more than a kilometre as the crow flies from the <strong>beach of Porto Ferro<\/strong> and, from a <strong>geomorphological<\/strong> point of view, it formed precisely after the stopbank of a <strong>sand dune<\/strong> (standing 30 metres tall), the fluvial valleys of the <strong>rio Bastianeddu<\/strong> and other minor rivers. The <strong>rio Bastianeddu<\/strong> is the main river flowing into the lake.<br \/>\nOver the years, its <strong>depth<\/strong> has varied considerably, going from a <strong>maximum level of -14 metres<\/strong> (in the 1960s) to a <strong>minimum of -5 metres<\/strong> (in the 1970s), partially due to extraction for <strong>agricultural purposes<\/strong>. Currently, the level of the lake is around <strong>-6 metres<\/strong> in depth and its <strong>perimeter<\/strong> is about 1<strong>2 kilometres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>flora<\/strong> point of view, the Baratz is surrounded by a luxuriant <strong>forest area<\/strong>, a mixture of <strong>pine grove<\/strong> and <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong>. There are <strong>strawberry tree<\/strong> plants, <strong>phillyrea<\/strong>, <strong>rockrose<\/strong>, <strong>rosemary<\/strong>, <strong>myrtle<\/strong>, <strong>lavender<\/strong>, and a number of species of <strong>wild orchids<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAs far as the <strong>fauna<\/strong> is concerned, the <strong>most important<\/strong> species include the <strong>freshwater turtle<\/strong>, the <strong>coots<\/strong> and the <strong>mallard<\/strong>. Its waters also contain fish introduced artificially like the <strong>black bullhead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are many <strong>myths and legends<\/strong> about the lake, as well as <strong>recent historical<\/strong> facts. Indeed, during the <strong>Second World War,<\/strong> the area housed a <strong>German military base<\/strong>. During their withdrawal, the German army managed to recover all its arsenal and dumped it into the lake.
