{"id":29775,"date":"2023-08-11T11:31:07","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T09:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/botanical-gardens\/"},"modified":"2023-08-11T11:31:07","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T09:31:07","slug":"botanical-gardens","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/botanical-gardens\/","title":{"rendered":"Botanical Gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Hortus Botanicus Karalitanus <\/strong>(<strong>HBK<\/strong>) includes the <strong>Botanical Gardens<\/strong>, <strong>Sardinia\u2019s Gene Bank<\/strong> (<strong>BG-SAR<\/strong>) and the <strong>Botanical Museum<\/strong> (<strong>MBK<\/strong>). As well as its research work, and providing environmental information and education, some of its main objectives include the <strong>preservation and enhancement of plant diversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Botanical Gardens<\/strong>, stretching across a surface area of around 5 hectares, stands on an <strong>archaeological site<\/strong> between the Roman Amphitheatre and the Villa di Tigellio. It has a well and several cisterns from the <strong>Roman era<\/strong> which have been carefully preserved. It houses collections of <strong>tropical<\/strong>, <strong>subtropical<\/strong> and <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> species, with four greenhouses and different pools dedicated to aquatic plants. Some of the most attractive areas include the \u201c<strong>Palm Grove<\/strong>\u201d, the \u201c<strong>Desert<\/strong>\u201d (displaying succulent plants of mainly African and neo-tropical origin), the <strong>Roman quarry<\/strong>, the <strong>Mediterranean forest<\/strong>, the <strong>Biodiversity Rockeries<\/strong> and the <strong>Orto dei Semplici (Simple Garden of Medicinal Plants)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sardinia\u2019s Gene Bank<\/strong> (<strong>BG-SAR<\/strong>) plays a key role in <strong>preserving<\/strong> Sardinia\u2019s native plant species and in <strong>protecting<\/strong> its ecosystems which run the highest risk of extinction on the island. Its key research work is linked mostly to <em>ex situ<\/em><strong> conservation<\/strong>, the study of \u201c<strong>invasive alien species<\/strong>\u201d and <strong>paleoethnobotany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Botanical Museum<\/strong> (<strong>MBK<\/strong>) is home to a display of <strong>antique scientific instruments<\/strong> dating back to the 1800s and the early 1900s. It has a collection of models produced according to the ancient art of <strong>ceroplastics<\/strong>. These include a model of the first plant in the Botanical Gardens.
