{"id":29770,"date":"2023-08-11T11:31:06","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T09:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/medieval-fortifications\/"},"modified":"2023-12-01T11:39:19","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T10:39:19","slug":"medieval-fortifications","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/medieval-fortifications\/","title":{"rendered":"Medieval fortifications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fortifications of the residential area of <strong>Villa di Chiesa <\/strong>were built in the second half of the XIII century on the wishes of the <strong>della Gherardesca<\/strong> family. The Medieval city walls surrounded the entire town which nowadays is the old town centre; as well as the walls, it also took in the entrance gates and the lookout and defence towers.<\/p>\n<p>The defence wall belt was<strong> polygonal shaped,<\/strong> and the <strong>wall was<\/strong> 7 metres high, produced in a mix of stones with crenellated end point; the 20 <strong>towers<\/strong>, on the other hand, stood 10 metres high. <strong>Four entrance gates<\/strong> provided access to the town centre: Porta Maestra to the south, Porta Sant&#8217;Antonio to the north, Porta Castello to the south-east and Porta Nuova to the west.
