Designed to meet <strong>the architectural criteria of the Jesuits<\/strong>, building <strong>work on it<\/strong> began in <strong>1687<\/strong>; it was opened a decade later still partially incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>The facade, in <strong>Late Mannerist<\/strong> style is split into three transoms and two orders. Access is through a <strong>porch with three arches<\/strong>. <strong>Windows<\/strong> open out framed by <strong>Caryatids<\/strong> in the upper order of the facade; the facade is rounded off by a <strong>gable<\/strong> joined up by capitals to the order below. The gable houses a statue of<strong> the archangel, San Michele<\/strong> in a niche.<\/p>\n<p>The building has a <strong>central layout<\/strong> with three <strong>chapels<\/strong> either side, interconnecting in a <strong>deambulatory<\/strong>, and a raised <strong>presbytery<\/strong>. The hall is covered with a <strong>dome<\/strong> on an octagonal tholobate, flanked by two <strong>bell gables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The church\u2019s interior is elaborately decorated with <strong>frescoes<\/strong>, <strong>wooden furniture<\/strong> and <strong>stuccoes<\/strong>. The <strong>high altar<\/strong> in polychrome marble<strong> is attributed to Giuseppe Maria Massetti<\/strong> and <strong>Pietro Pozzo<\/strong>; while <strong>Giacomo Altomonte<\/strong> and <strong>Dominico Colombino<\/strong> were responsible for most of the <strong>canvases<\/strong> in the building.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Pulpit of Carlo V<\/strong> stands in the church\u2019s atrium and originates from the destroyed church of S. Francesco in Stampace.
