{"id":29759,"date":"2023-08-11T11:31:04","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T09:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/pedres-castle\/"},"modified":"2023-11-06T09:33:01","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T08:33:01","slug":"pedres-castle","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/pedres-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"Pedres Castle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Located to the west of the city of Olbia, it stands on the summit of a granite outcrop dominating a vast flat area.<br \/>\nNearby, you will find two sites from the Nuragic era, <strong>the tomb of the giants of Monte &#8216;e S&#8217;Abe and the Nuraghe Casteddhu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The castle was built in the <strong>XIII century<\/strong>,\u00a0during the Visconti period of the Judicate of Gallura to defend Civita (modern-day Olbia) and the borders with the Judicate of Torres. It was occupied from the middle of the <strong>XIV century by the Aragonese<\/strong> and abandoned in the XV century. The castle served both for defence purposes and as a residence.<\/p>\n<p>The fortified layout, which has been restored, is made up of <strong>two curtain walls <\/strong>positioned on different levels: <strong>the first one, in a four-sided shape <\/strong>, encompasses a terracing half way up the promontory; <strong>the second one, in a polygonal shape<\/strong>, encloses the peak of the hill.  The terracing and peak are linked by a stairway.<\/p>\n<p>The remains of some buildings are preserved at the top of the promontory: <strong>a square-shaped tower<\/strong> standing about 10 m high, at its highest point and created with blocks of granite and tuff; <strong>a rectangular building<\/strong> with a <strong>triple cross-vault<\/strong> roof and a cistern in the middle; a rectangular-shaped room now collapsed and originally covered by a barrel-vaulted ceiling; a building constructed during the <strong>second world war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From Olbia, follow the country road SP24 in the direction of Loiri to reach the site. After about 3.3 km you will come to a road on your right indicating the castle. Turn right and continue along this road for about 2 km until you come to the car park.
