{"id":29725,"date":"2023-08-10T10:01:12","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T08:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/grotta-di-san-giovanni\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T14:22:32","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T13:22:32","slug":"grotta-di-san-giovanni","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/grotta-di-san-giovanni\/","title":{"rendered":"Grotta di San Giovanni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Cave of San Giovanni<\/strong> can be found in the municipality of <strong>Domusnovas<\/strong>, in the <strong>Iglesiente<\/strong> area (south-west Sardinia).<\/p>\n<p>This cavern was carved by the waters of the <strong>Rio de Monte Narba<\/strong> (later Rio San Giovanni) in the oldest<strong> limestone rocks<\/strong> on the island belonging to the <strong>Lower Cambrian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Its unusual feature comes from being mainly a <strong>natural tunnel<\/strong>. A road runs through it, previously accessible to cars, covering its entire length (<strong>850 metres<\/strong>). This aspect makes it <strong>unique in Italy<\/strong> and <strong>a rarity in the world<\/strong>. Indeed, there are only two similar examples in France and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The internal path extends in the <strong>north-south direction<\/strong>, with two <strong>monumental natural entrances<\/strong>. To the south, towards the town of Domusnovas, to the north on the <strong>Oridda Valley<\/strong> and the <strong>Marganai forest of oak trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Its naturalistic value, from a karstic point of view, comes from the presence of<strong> branches that are still active<\/strong>. The main branch, which can be followed along the road, features the flow of the river into <strong>large chambers<\/strong>, with different <strong>concretions<\/strong> like <strong>stalactite<\/strong><strong> and<\/strong> stalagmite <strong>pools<\/strong>. As well as the main branch, the cave spreads across two levels, accessible only with speleology equipment, making the cave over 2 kilometres long.<\/p>\n<p>The active branch &#8220;<strong>Su stampu de Pireddu<\/strong>&#8221; (given this name because it was thought to have been a hiding place of the bandit Pireddu) has a series of <strong>tunnels<\/strong> with <strong>small pools<\/strong> and <strong>siphons<\/strong>. <strong>Su Stampu<\/strong> is still to this day being studied and ends with a lake, a surface outcrop of a vast <strong>underground basin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<strong>Bobore<\/strong>\u201d branch, above the main tunnel, now <strong>fossil<\/strong>, has structures known as &#8220;<strong>karstic vacuums<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The name stems from an <strong>old chapel<\/strong> dedicated to the saint and built in <strong>the Middle Ages<\/strong> in a <strong>natural niche<\/strong> of the cave. The chapel was demolished when the road was under construction and replaced by a small church of the same name, <strong>the church of San Giovanni<\/strong>, near the south entrance to the cavern.<\/p>\n<p>Findings show that, in ancient times, the entrances to the cave were closed by <strong>fortified walls<\/strong> from the <strong>Nuragic age<\/strong> and of which only a few ruins have survived.
