{"id":29669,"date":"2023-08-03T11:54:32","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/porto-pino\/"},"modified":"2023-08-03T11:54:32","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:54:32","slug":"porto-pino","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/porto-pino\/","title":{"rendered":"Porto Pino"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Porto Pino<\/strong> can be found in the municipalities of <strong>Sant\u2019Anna Arresi<\/strong> and <strong>Teulada<\/strong>, in the <strong>Golfo di Palmas<\/strong>, along the <strong>southwestern coast of Sardinia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>bay<\/strong> extends for <strong>about six kilometres<\/strong>, between <strong>Punta Menga<\/strong> to the <strong>north<\/strong> and the <strong>promontory<\/strong> of <strong>Punta di Cala Piombo<\/strong> to the <strong>south<\/strong>. There are <strong>three stretches of sand<\/strong> along the coastline.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>first beach<\/strong>\u00a0extends for around <strong>600 metres<\/strong>, and the<strong> sandy shore<\/strong> is characterised by <strong>a fine grey sand<\/strong>, between <strong>Porto Pino harbour<\/strong> and a <strong>rocky embankment<\/strong> where the connecting outlet to the sea for the ponds was created. The <strong>pine forest of Aleppo pine<\/strong> extends behind this. This part of the beach is <strong>kitted out with a kiosk and swimming facilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing southwards, you will come to the <strong>second beach<\/strong>, stretching for about <strong>2 kilometres<\/strong> with <strong>fine, white sand<\/strong>. There is also a <strong>pine forest<\/strong> on this part, behind the beach. We can also find the <strong>Maestrale<\/strong> and <strong>is Brebeis Ponds<\/strong> in the forest and low dunes.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>third part<\/strong> extends for around <strong>1 kilometre<\/strong> and falls within the area of <strong>Teulada<\/strong> and in part inside the <strong>military shooting range at Capo Teulada<\/strong>. This area goes by the name of<strong> is Arenas Biancas<\/strong> (or <strong>Le Dune<\/strong>) due to the large <strong>dune field<\/strong> which extends across the southern part of the beach. The <strong>sandy shore<\/strong> features <strong>fine, white sand<\/strong>, with <strong>grey reflections<\/strong>.<br \/>\nOn the dunes with their almost desert like appearance, we can find <strong>bushes of euphorbia and juniper<\/strong>, bent by the wind and <strong>herbaceous plants<\/strong> like <strong>sea matweed<\/strong> and <strong>sea holly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>flora<\/strong> point of view, the <strong>pine wood<\/strong> plays an <strong>important naturalistic role<\/strong> in the area. Indeed, it is one of the few <strong>wild pine forests of Aleppo pine<\/strong> in <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, as well as the one found on the <strong>island of San Pietro<\/strong>. As well as the <strong>Aleppo pine<\/strong>, you can find <strong>kermes oak<\/strong>, typical of these coastal areas and it too <strong>very rare on the island<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Together with the pines, we find other plant varieties like the <strong>Phoenician juniper<\/strong> and the <strong>Juniperus macrocarpa<\/strong>. Expanses of <strong>low shrub and garigue<\/strong> with plants of <strong>phillyrea<\/strong>, <strong>rosemary<\/strong> and <strong>rockrose<\/strong> can be found in the areas most exposed to the wind.  The <strong>Pallenis maritima<\/strong> and the <strong>sea lavender<\/strong> also grow on the <strong>cliffs<\/strong> and in the<strong> rocky areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>wetland<\/strong> in the backshore features an <strong>extended system of ponds<\/strong>: <strong>Porto Pino pond<\/strong>, <strong>Maestrale pond<\/strong>, <strong>Is Brebeis pond<\/strong>, <strong>Corvo pond<\/strong> and <strong>the Foxi pond<\/strong>. The entire <strong>wetland area<\/strong> is used for <strong>fish farming<\/strong> and is connected with the <strong>salina of Santa Caterina<\/strong>, in the area of <strong>San Giovanni Suergiu<\/strong>. The area is the natural <strong><em>habitat<\/em> of<\/strong> different <strong>bird species<\/strong>, such as the <strong>pink flamingo<\/strong>, the <strong>little egret<\/strong>, the <strong>common kingfisher<\/strong> and the <strong>common sandpiper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>bay of Porto Pino<\/strong> was used as a <strong>seaport<\/strong> as early as the <strong>Punic-Phoenician era<\/strong>, later becoming a <strong>trading centre in Roman times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>remains<\/strong> of an <strong>anti-ship gun battery from the Second World War<\/strong>, named after admiral <strong>Candiani<\/strong> sits in the <strong>promontory of Punta Menga<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area is part of the <strong>Site of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) &#8220;<strong>Promontorio, dune e zona umida di Porto Pino<\/strong>&#8221; (ITB040025), regulated by the <strong>Rete Natura 2000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":28948,"template":"","tipologia":[976,1066,988,1063],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29669","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-area-di-interesse-naturalistico-en","tipologia-shoreline","tipologia-spiaggia-en","tipologia-wetland","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Porto Pino - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/porto-pino\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Porto Pino - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Porto Pino can be found in the municipalities of Sant\u2019Anna Arresi and Teulada, in the Golfo di Palmas, along the southwestern coast of Sardinia.
