{"id":29661,"date":"2023-08-03T11:54:20","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/porto-botte-beach-and-pond\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T11:31:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T10:31:59","slug":"porto-botte-beach-and-pond","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/porto-botte-beach-and-pond\/","title":{"rendered":"Porto Botte Beach and Pond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Porto Botte beach and pond<\/strong> can be found along the <strong>coastal area of Giba<\/strong>, in the <strong>southwestern coast of Sardinia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>beach<\/strong> extends for around <strong>a kilometre and a half<\/strong> remaining fairly narrow between the wetland and sea.<br \/>\nThe <strong>sandy shore<\/strong> features <strong>large grain sand<\/strong> with an abundance of <strong>shells<\/strong> (<strong>gastropod and bivalvia shells<\/strong>). The seabed is fairly low.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong><\/strong><strong> Porto Botte Pond&#8217;s<\/strong> wetland lies behind the beach and is a<strong> naturalistic site <\/strong>of considerable importance.<br \/>\nThe <strong>pond<\/strong> is cordoned off to the west by a <strong>spit<\/strong>, and to the south by the <strong>Baiocca pond<\/strong> (in the area of <strong>Masainas<\/strong>) and to the north-east and south-east by <strong>flood terraces<\/strong>. Its depth doesn\u2019t exceed <strong>50 cm<\/strong>. <strong>Porto Botte<\/strong> is connected to the <strong>Baiocca Pond<\/strong> via the <strong>reclaimed gullies<\/strong>, and both basins receive water from the flood plain.<\/p>\n<p>The pond is connected to the sea via an <strong>artificial canal<\/strong>, controlled by a<strong> system of locks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the area was subject to different <strong>reclamation works<\/strong> which did not, however, <strong>alter<\/strong> the site\u2019s ancient <strong>physiognomy and morphology<\/strong> allowing <strong>its naturalness to be preserved<\/strong>. This is clear from the presence of <strong>typical pond vegetation<\/strong>, as well as the presence of <strong>different aquatic bird species<\/strong>.
