{"id":29651,"date":"2023-08-03T11:54:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/foresta-di-montimannu\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T10:27:04","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T09:27:04","slug":"foresta-di-montimannu","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/foresta-di-montimannu\/","title":{"rendered":"Foresta di Montimannu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>state-owned Montimannu Forest<\/strong> is one of the largest forestry areas in <strong>Sardinia<\/strong> and extends across the municipalities of <strong>Villacidro<\/strong>, <strong>Iglesias<\/strong> and <strong>Domusnovas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It covers around <strong>4,600 hectares<\/strong> with <strong>uncontaminated natural landscapes<\/strong>, <strong>natural monuments<\/strong>, <strong>Nuragic archaeological<\/strong> and <strong>industrial sites<\/strong> and some of the highest <strong>waterfalls<\/strong> in <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, such as the <strong>Muru Mannu<\/strong> and <strong>Piscina Irgas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area\u2019s <strong>geology<\/strong> features <strong>granite rocks<\/strong> which in some points form imposing <strong>rock walls<\/strong>, with narrow paths running along them. To the south, the granite makes way for <strong>metamorphic rocks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>forest<\/strong> is dominated by the presence of <strong>holm oak<\/strong> and <strong>cork<\/strong>, together with other typical <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> essences. <strong>Ash trees<\/strong> can be found in some areas near <strong>rivers<\/strong> while other areas have been the subject of <strong>reforestation with pine trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The forest is also the natural <strong><em>habitat<\/em> for<\/strong> the <strong>mouflon<\/strong>, <strong>boar<\/strong> and <strong>Sardinian deer<\/strong>. It is not uncommon to spot the <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong> and <strong>golden eagle<\/strong> flying above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Punta Acqua Zinnigas<\/strong> (1,136 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak in the forest. This is a <strong>panoramic spot<\/strong> from where, on a clear day, you will have views as far as the <strong>Gennargentu<\/strong>, <strong>Serpedd\u00ec<\/strong> and <strong>Sette Fratelli<\/strong> massifs, the <strong>Golfo di Cagliari<\/strong>, the <strong>Monti del Sulcis<\/strong> and the <strong>Isola di San Pietro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area has an <strong>abundance of water<\/strong> with <strong>springs<\/strong> and <strong>rivers<\/strong> like the <strong>rio Cannisoni<\/strong> and the <strong>rio d\u2019Oridda<\/strong>, which merge in the valley into the <strong>Rio Leni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Campu de Isca<\/strong> we can find a <strong>nursery<\/strong>, for the <strong>production of reforestation plants<\/strong>. The nursery is home to <strong>holm oak<\/strong>, <strong>cork<\/strong>, <strong>pine<\/strong>, <strong>wild olive<\/strong>, <strong>carob<\/strong>, <strong>cedar<\/strong>, <strong>downy oak<\/strong> trees and a variety of other <strong>Mediterranean essences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The entire forest is crossed by an <strong>extensive network of old mule tracks and paths<\/strong> many of them marked with <strong>CAI (Italian Alpine Club)<\/strong> signs. A <strong>leg<\/strong> of the <strong>Santa Barbara Mining Trail<\/strong> also crosses through the forest.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <strong>mountain camp<\/strong>, nowadays used as a <strong>restaurant<\/strong>, and the <strong>forest rangers\u2019 barracks<\/strong> at the foot of the <strong>Monte Acqua Piccinna<\/strong> (1010 m a.s.l.).
