{"id":29650,"date":"2023-08-03T11:54:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/foresta-di-pantaleo\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T10:18:58","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T09:18:58","slug":"foresta-di-pantaleo","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/foresta-di-pantaleo\/","title":{"rendered":"Foresta di Pantaleo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Forest of Pantaleo<\/strong> extends across the municipalities of <strong>Santadi<\/strong> and <strong>Nuxis<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Sud Sardegna<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt covers around<strong> 4,200 hectares<\/strong> and is part of the vast <strong>Gutturu Mannu forestry system<\/strong>, which falls between the municipalities of Assemini, Capoterra, Pula, Santadi, Sarroch Siliqua, Teulada, Uta and Villa San Pietro.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Pantaleo forest<\/strong> is considered one of the most <strong>extensive holm oak woods<\/strong> in the world. As well as the <strong>holm oak<\/strong>, the forest is also home to <strong>cork<\/strong>, <strong>English yew<\/strong>, <strong>holly<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong>, <strong>myrtle<\/strong> and the <strong>strawberry tree<\/strong>, the <strong>Genista aetnensis<\/strong> and specimens of <strong>elder<\/strong> and <strong>Montpellier maple<\/strong>, as well as typical <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> <strong>bush<\/strong> and <strong>herbaceous<\/strong> essences. In springtime, the <strong>violet flowers<\/strong> of the <strong>peony<\/strong> make their appearance. Two unusual features include the <strong>largest<\/strong> <strong>eucalyptus tree in Sardinia<\/strong> and the presence of <strong>\u201ccrossbreed\u201d plants of cork and holm oak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>fauna<\/strong> point of view, Pantaleo is one of the <strong>natural<\/strong> <em><strong>habitats<\/strong><\/em> <strong>for<\/strong> the <strong>Sardinian deer<\/strong> and is also home to colonies of <strong>fallow deer<\/strong>, <strong>boar<\/strong>, <strong>weasels<\/strong>, <strong>wild cats<\/strong>, <strong>martens<\/strong> and <strong>foxes<\/strong>.<br \/>\nFlying overhead, you can spot different<strong> migratory birds<\/strong> while <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>birds of prey<\/strong> are nesting. It is also possible to catch a glimpse of the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, <strong>goshawk<\/strong>, <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong> and <strong>sparrowhawk<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSince <strong>1988<\/strong>, the forest has been home to a <strong>fauna centre for breeding Sardinian hares<\/strong> (<em>Lepus capensis mediterraneus<\/em>), a species considered <strong>at risk of extinction<\/strong>. The centre can be visited following a <strong>teaching itinerary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, we can also find <strong>Sa Spindua<\/strong> where it is possible to observe <strong>rapids<\/strong> and <strong>waterfalls<\/strong> along the course of the <strong>rio Maxias<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Panteleo<\/strong> is also rich in <strong>archaeological findings<\/strong> like the <strong>Is Figueras thermal baths dating from Roman times<\/strong>. There are also a number of <strong>industrial archaeological<\/strong> sites, with <strong>charcoal kilns<\/strong> linked to the production of <strong>coal for gunpowder<\/strong>, active between 1872 and 1951.
