The Poetto<\/strong> is the main beach in the city of Cagliari<\/strong> and Quartu Sant\u2019Elena<\/strong> and, generally serving the metropolitan city<\/strong>. The beach is a single unit<\/strong> which, from a purely administrative point of view, is split between Cagliari (Poetto<\/strong>) and Quartu (Quartu Beach<\/strong> or Poetto di Quartu<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Overall, the beach stretches for a total of around seven and a half kilometres<\/strong>, from the small port if Marina Piccola<\/strong> (Cagliari) to Margine Rosso<\/strong> (Quartu S.Elena).<\/p>\n

In the past, the inhabitants of the city of Cagliari<\/strong>, preferred beaches to the west of the city<\/strong> (like the beach of Giorgino<\/strong>). The area of Poetto was linked mainly to salt extraction<\/strong>, which began as far back as Roman times<\/strong> continuing on from the Middle Ages<\/strong> right up to modern times (officially until 1985)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the second half of the XVI century<\/strong>, a number of lookout towers<\/strong> were built on the sandy shore during the Spanish domination<\/strong> of the island, and their ruins can still be seen on the beach. Their purpose was to defend the city from Barbareschi invasions by sea.<\/p>\n

From the start of the XX century,<\/strong> the inhabitants of Cagliari \u201cdiscovered<\/em>\u201d the beach and the first beach resorts<\/strong> and kiosks<\/strong> started to appear together with a summer camp<\/strong> and traditional multicoloured wooden houses<\/strong>, built on the sandy shore\u2019s stilts, which were known as \u201ccasotti<\/b>\u201d (completely removed in 1986).<\/p>\n

Nowadays, it is the most popular beach and is one of the largest urban beaches in Europe<\/strong>, so much so that it is called the “Beach of the hundred thousand<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

Its original sand<\/strong> is fine and clear<\/strong>, its seabeds<\/strong> aren\u2019t too deep<\/strong> and the sea water is clear and transparent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Following increasingly insistent anthropic activity<\/strong> on the beach, removal of sand<\/strong> for building use, construction of roads and building <\/strong>in the dune area and the withdrawal of the Posidonia oceanica meadow<\/strong>, scientific research in 1989, showed a high level of erosion and decline<\/strong> in the sandy shore.
\nThis led to different \u201crestoration\u201d works on the beach<\/strong>, starting with the disputed beach nourishment<\/strong> in 2002, up to more recent interventions to reconstruct the dune system<\/strong> with naturalistic engineering procedures.<\/p>\n

The Molentargius-Saline Nature Reserve<\/strong> can be reached from the beach across the “Vie del sale<\/strong>“, with an entrance right behind the seafront. The park<\/strong> is one of the island\u2019s most important naturalistic sites<\/strong> with the nesting<\/strong> of different bird species like the Pink Flamingo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is easy to reach the beach from the city centre. There is a full range of bathing facilities<\/strong>, kiosks<\/strong> and restaurants<\/strong>. There is also plenty of parking<\/strong> and amateur sports events are organised<\/strong> on the seafront.<\/p>\n
