{"id":29608,"date":"2023-08-03T11:44:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/parco-nazionale-dellarcipelago-di-la-maddalena\/"},"modified":"2023-11-06T13:55:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T12:55:24","slug":"parco-nazionale-dellarcipelago-di-la-maddalena","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/parco-nazionale-dellarcipelago-di-la-maddalena\/","title":{"rendered":"Parco nazionale dell&#8217;Arcipelago di La Maddalena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Maddalena Archipelago National Park<\/strong> sits to the north-east of <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, close to the <strong>Bocche di Bonifacio (Strait of Bonifacio)<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>La Maddalena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park was the first of its kind in Sardinia and extends across land and sea for more than <strong>20,000 hectares<\/strong> taking in around <strong>180 kilometres of coastline<\/strong>. The archipelago consists of different <strong>islands<\/strong>, <strong>islets<\/strong> and <strong>emerging rocks<\/strong>, including more than <strong>60 islands<\/strong>, large and small, formed by the wind, waves in coastal storms and the currents in the nearby <strong>Bocche di Bonifacio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The larger islands, as well as <strong>La Maddalena<\/strong>, include <strong>Budelli<\/strong>, <strong>Caprera<\/strong>, <strong>Razzoli<\/strong>, <strong>Santa Maria<\/strong>, <strong>Santo Stefano<\/strong> and <strong>Spargi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Almost the entire <strong>La Maddalena National Park<\/strong> is part of the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI). The area has more than <strong>700 plant species<\/strong>, with over <strong>50 local species<\/strong> and numerous other <strong>rare and interesting ones<\/strong>. There are also numerous<em><strong><\/strong><\/em> <strong>priority<\/strong> habitats and of <strong>community importance<\/strong>.<br \/>\nFrom a <strong>flora<\/strong> point of view, the main species are those typically found along the <strong>Mediterranean coastal strip<\/strong> with the <strong>shrub<\/strong> dominated by <strong>juniper<\/strong>, <strong>strawberry trees<\/strong>, <strong>phillyrea<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong>, <strong>myrtle<\/strong>, <strong>heather<\/strong>, <strong>broom<\/strong>, <strong>rockrose<\/strong> and <strong>euphorbia<\/strong>. Towards the coast, the vegetation wears away from shrub to <strong>garigues<\/strong> where <strong>glasswort species<\/strong> appear. The sandy surfaces are home to typical species in these environments.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the <strong>fauna<\/strong> is concerned, the park is home to <strong>large see mammals<\/strong>\u00a0such as <strong>fin<\/strong> whales, <strong>sperm whales<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>common bottlenose dolphins<\/strong>. It is also not uncommon to encounter\u00a0<strong>Loggerhead sea turtles<\/strong>. The <strong>pinna nobilis<\/strong>, the largest bivalve crustacean, can be found on the seabeds. Volatiles include the <strong>Audouin&#8217;s gull<br \/>\n<\/strong> and the <strong>European shag<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One famous feature of the park is the <strong>Pink Beach<\/strong> at <strong>Budelli<\/strong>. Its sand mainly consists of the remains of a small organism which cling to shells as well as alga, coral and shells, giving the sand its typical pink colour.<\/p>\n<p>The park\u2019s headquarters is in <strong>La Maddalena<\/strong>, a small town founded in 1770 and was, for many years, an Italian naval base. Thanks to its position, the <strong>archipelago<\/strong> sits in a <strong>strategic point of the Mediterranean<\/strong>. This is why in the past it attracted the attention of historical figures like <strong>Napoleon Bonaparte<\/strong> and <strong>Admiral Horatio Nelson<\/strong>. <strong>Giuseppe Garibaldi<\/strong> spent the last 26 years of his life on the island of <strong>Caprera<\/strong>. Nowadays, his home is a <strong>museum<\/strong> known as the <strong>Compendio Garibaldino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>centres for environmental education<\/strong> and <strong>whale research inside the park<\/strong> as well as <strong>mineral <\/strong> and <strong>sea<\/strong> museums, displaying minerals, fossils, sand, shells, flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>The park is part of the European network of areas of environmental excellence and is extremely well protected.
