With an expanse of around <strong>60 thousand hectares<\/strong>, it takes in the municipalities of <strong>Burcei<\/strong>, <strong>Castiadas<\/strong>, <strong>Maracalagonis<\/strong>, <strong>Quartucciu<\/strong>, <strong>Quartu Sant&#8217;Elena<\/strong>, <strong>San Vito<\/strong>, <strong>Sinnai<\/strong>, <strong>Villasalto<\/strong> and <strong>Villasimius<\/strong> and is one of the largest parks in Sardinia.<\/p>\n<p>The park area is mainly mountainous with <strong>granite rock<\/strong> and has an abundance of small <strong>valleys and rivers<\/strong>. The main peaks coming in at around one thousand metres are: <strong>Punta Serpedd\u00ec<\/strong> (1067 m a.s.l.), the <strong>peaks of the Sette Fratelli<\/strong> (<strong>Punta Sa Ceraxa<\/strong>, 1018 m a.s.l.) and <strong>Monte Genis<\/strong> (979 m a.s.l.).<\/p>\n<p>A number of torrential rivers run through the forest. The rivers in the north-eastern area feed into the <strong>Sarrabus pond<\/strong> system. To the west, they flow into the <strong>rio Maidopis<\/strong>, while to the south, they feed into the <strong>rio sa Ceraxa<\/strong>, which emerges into the Geremeas coastline and the <strong>rio<\/strong> <strong>Su Pau<\/strong> which emerges into the <strong>Flumini<\/strong> (Quartu S.Elena) area. These rivers characterise the landscape giving rise to <strong>small natural pools<\/strong> and <strong>waterfalls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>vegetation<\/strong> offers an abundance of <strong>typical plants<\/strong> as well as various essences in the Mediterranean area. The <strong>forest<\/strong> is dominated by plants of <strong>holm oak<\/strong>, <strong>cork<\/strong>, <strong>downy oak<\/strong> and <strong>broom<\/strong>. We can find <strong>strawberry trees<\/strong>, <strong>thyme<\/strong>, <strong>lavender<\/strong>, <strong>heather<\/strong> and <strong>viburnum<\/strong> in the <strong>undergrowth<\/strong> and <strong>shrub<\/strong>. In the lower regions, we find <strong>myrtle<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong>, <strong>wild olive<\/strong> and <strong>juniper<\/strong>. In addition to these, we can find <strong>oleander<\/strong>, <strong>poplar trees<\/strong> and <strong>willow trees<\/strong> along the riverbanks.<\/p>\n<p>The forest is a <strong>natural habitat<\/strong> for the <strong>Sardinian deer<\/strong>, <strong>boar<\/strong>, <strong>rabbits<\/strong>, <strong>hares<\/strong>, <strong>martens<\/strong> and <strong>wild cats<\/strong>. Furthermore, in a protected, fenced-off area, there are specimens of <strong>fallow deer<\/strong>. The <strong>mouflon<\/strong>, extinct in this area, was reintroduced from 1987 onwards (in the Monte Genis section).<\/p>\n<p>A number of birds of prey live in the area including the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, the <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong>, <strong>barn owls<\/strong> and the <strong>Goshawk<\/strong>, species typically found in Sardinia.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the park we can find a number of interesting places like the &#8220;<strong>Sa Perda de sa Pippia<\/strong>&#8220;, a huge granite rock and the ruins of &#8220;<strong>Su Gunventu<\/strong>&#8221; (590 m a.s.l.)<\/p>\n<p>The park can easily be reached from Cagliari along the trunk road SS 125 \u201c<em>Orientale sarda<\/em>\u201d as far as km 30, at the <strong>Arcu \u2018e Tidu<\/strong> crossing (fork for Burcei). Turn right at the fork towards the <strong>service centre,<\/strong> the &#8220;<strong>former Umberto Noci<\/strong>\u201d barracks, in <strong>Campu Omu<\/strong>.
