{"id":29602,"date":"2023-08-03T11:43:48","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/parco-nazionale-dellasinara\/"},"modified":"2023-08-03T11:43:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:43:48","slug":"parco-nazionale-dellasinara","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/parco-nazionale-dellasinara\/","title":{"rendered":"Parco Nazionale dell&#8217;Asinara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Asinara National Park<\/strong> and its <strong>Protected Marine Area, &#8220;Isola dell&#8217;Asinara\u201d<\/strong> are situated in the municipality of <strong>Porto Torres<\/strong>, in the <strong>Province of Sassari<\/strong>. The entire park is represented by the island of the same name, <strong>isola dell&#8217;Asinara<\/strong> and the sea surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>The island was a <strong>penal colony<\/strong> from <strong>1885<\/strong> onwards and later became a <strong>maximum-security prison<\/strong> in the <strong>1980s<\/strong>, up until <strong>1998<\/strong>. In <strong>2002,<\/strong> the <strong>Park<\/strong> was officially founded.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>island of Asinara<\/strong>, despite being small, has a considerable variety of <strong>geological and geomorphological features<\/strong>. The <strong>western coastline<\/strong>, exposed to <strong>Mistral winds and coastal storms<\/strong>, is mostly <strong>rocky<\/strong>, with <strong>cliffs<\/strong> reaching as high as <strong>200 m. a.s.l.<\/strong> The <strong>eastern coastline<\/strong>, on the other hand, is lower and has a number of <strong>bays and sandy beaches<\/strong>, surrounded by <strong>small dune systems<\/strong> and backshore<strong> wetlands<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThere is no lack of <strong>hilly landscapes<\/strong>, indeed the peak of the island, <strong>Punta della Scomunica<\/strong>, stands<strong>408 m a.s.l.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The island\u2019s <strong>flora<\/strong> has been subject to years of significant <strong>human<\/strong> and <strong>grazing activity<\/strong> (with the introduction of goats). The <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> dominates the island\u2019s landscape with a strong presence of <strong>euphorbia<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong>, <strong>rockrose<\/strong> and <strong>juniper<\/strong>. There are also different <strong>typical plants<\/strong>\u00a0like the <strong>Centaurea horrida<\/strong>, the <strong>sea lavender<\/strong>, the<strong> Genista corsica<\/strong> and the <strong>Astragalus terraccianoi Vals.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <strong>sandy coastlines<\/strong> are abundant with <strong>Thinopyrum junceum<\/strong>, <strong>sea matweed<\/strong>, <strong>cottonweed<\/strong> and <strong>sea daffodil<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe only <strong>forest formation<\/strong> can be found in <em><strong>Elighe Mannu<\/strong><\/em> home to a small ancient formation of <strong>holm oaks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park offers a wide variety of <strong>fauna<\/strong> including the <strong>mouflon<\/strong> and <strong>Sardinian wild boar<\/strong>. Also worth mentioning, <strong>from a nature point of view<\/strong> is the colony of <strong>Asinara white donkeys<\/strong> found on the island.<br \/>\nAsinara is also an important <strong>transitory point<\/strong> for different species of <strong>migratory birds<\/strong>. <strong>About 150 species of birds<\/strong> have been identified, many of them of particular naturalistic importance.<\/p>\n<p>The island offers a number of visitor services including <strong>simple accommodation and eating facilities<\/strong> like the <strong>kiosk in Fornelli,<\/strong> the <strong>bar at Cala Reale,<\/strong>\u00a0the <strong>\u201cL\u2019Asino Bianco\u201d<\/strong> restaurant, the <strong>Locanda del Parco<\/strong> and the <strong>hostel-restaurant in Cala d\u2019Oliva<\/strong>. It is also possible to visit the <strong>&#8220;Storie d&#8217;Asinara\u201d permanent exhibition<\/strong> on the island at the <strong>Visitors\u2019 Centre in Cala Reale<\/strong>. There is an <strong>Environmental Education Centre<\/strong> at <strong>Cala d&#8217;Oliva<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park can be reached by <strong>ferry<\/strong> or <strong>private boat<\/strong>, <strong>from Stintino to the Fornelli jetty<\/strong> (to the south) or <strong>from Porto Torres to Cala Reale<\/strong> (further north).<br \/>\nWe recommend visiting the park with <strong>authorised guides<\/strong>.
