{"id":29601,"date":"2023-08-03T11:43:48","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/molentargius-saline-regional-nature-reserve\/"},"modified":"2023-11-06T12:35:33","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T11:35:33","slug":"molentargius-saline-regional-nature-reserve","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/molentargius-saline-regional-nature-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Molentargius &#8211; Saline Regional Nature Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Molentargius &#8211; Saline Regional Nature Reserve<\/strong> consists of an extensive wetland which falls between the municipalities of <strong>Cagliari<\/strong> and <strong>Quartu Sant&#8217;Elena<\/strong>, with a small part of it in <strong>Quartucciu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The wetland of the <strong>Molentargius Pond<\/strong> has long been recognised as one of the most important in the <strong>Mediterranean area<\/strong>\u00a0and as far back as <strong>1977<\/strong> was placed under protection with the <strong>Convenzione di Ramsar<\/strong> (<em>Agreement on wetlands of international importance<\/em>). It is also part of the <strong>Site of Community Interest<\/strong> (SCI) and is a <strong>Special Protection Area<\/strong> (SPA). The <strong>Regional Park<\/strong> was officially established in <strong>1999<\/strong> under a dedicated <strong>Regional Law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The park has a number of <strong>small lakes<\/strong>, some of them fresh water, like the <strong>Bellarosa Minore<\/strong> and the <strong>Perdalonga<\/strong>. Others are <strong>salt water<\/strong>, like the <strong>Bellarosa Maggiore<\/strong> (the <strong>actual \u201cMolentargius\u201d<\/strong>) and the <strong>Saline<\/strong>. These are separated by the Bellarosa Maggiore from a <strong>strip of sand<\/strong> known as <strong>Is Arenas<\/strong>. This subdivision into <strong>different environments<\/strong> has encouraged the growth of different kinds of vegetation based on the levels of saltiness, which helps develop different habitats.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important features of the park is the <strong>nesting<\/strong> of the <strong>pink flamingo<\/strong> (<em>Phoenicopterus roseus<\/em> Pallas, 1811). Research has shown that the flamingo started nesting in the <strong>park<\/strong>\u00a0in the <strong>early 1990s<\/strong>, especially in the <strong>Bellarosa maggiore<\/strong> area. This is where they find their \u201c<strong>favourite food<\/strong>\u201d, the crustacean <strong>Artemia salina<\/strong>, a key part of their diet and what gives them their typical pink colour.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the flamingo, we can also find other bird species (around one third of European bird species), the most famous ones being: <strong>Cormorant<\/strong>, <strong>Great egret<\/strong>, <strong>Purple heron<\/strong>, <strong>Little egret<\/strong>, <strong>Avocet<\/strong>, <strong>Sandwich tern<\/strong>, <strong>Black-winged stilt<\/strong>, <strong>Audouin&#8217;s gull<\/strong>, <strong>Slender-billed gull<br \/>\n<\/strong>, <strong>Wood sandpiper<\/strong>, <strong>Sterna<\/strong>, <strong>Common kingfisher<\/strong>, <strong>Cetti&#8217;s warbler<\/strong>, <strong>Western marsh harrier<\/strong>, <strong>Mallard<\/strong>, <strong>Western swamphen<\/strong> and many others.<\/p>\n<p>These species come to the pond during the <strong>overwintering period<\/strong> and remain in the area. This is a unique feature of this park as it is the most anthropised area in Sardinia.<\/p>\n<p>There are also different <strong>amphibians<\/strong> and <strong>reptiles<\/strong> such as: <strong>European green toad<\/strong>, <strong>Sardinian tree frog<\/strong>, <strong>different species of tortoise<\/strong>, <strong>Italian wall lizard<\/strong>, <strong>Green whip snake<\/strong> and <strong>Horseshoe whipsnake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>place name, <em>Molentargius<\/em><\/strong> derives from the Sardinian word &#8220;<em><strong>molenti<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; meaning &#8220;<strong>donkey<\/strong>&#8220;. Donkeys were used at the state-owned Saltworks up until 1985 to pull the barges full of salt from the shore. Those <strong>directing the donkeys<\/strong> were known as the &#8220;<em>molentargius<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The park headquarters currently houses the <strong>&#8220;Molentargius\u201d Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability<\/strong>, at the<strong>Edificio Sali Scelti<\/strong>.
