{"id":29587,"date":"2023-08-03T11:43:37","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/necropoli-a-domus-de-janas-di-mesu-e-montes\/"},"modified":"2023-08-25T14:35:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T12:35:58","slug":"necropoli-a-domus-de-janas-di-mesu-e-montes","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/necropoli-a-domus-de-janas-di-mesu-e-montes\/","title":{"rendered":"Necropoli a domus de janas di Mesu &#8216;e Montes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even item-1 first last\">\n<p>The necropolis of <em>Mesu<\/em> \u2018<em>e<\/em> <em>Montes<\/em> can be found around seven kilometres from the town of <strong>Ossi.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Dug out of a limestone crag, on the southern slope of Monte <em>Mamas,\u00a0<\/em>it consists of <strong>18 domus\u00a0de\u00a0janas<\/strong>, all of them with multiple cells, split into two groups by a pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Tombs I, II, III, IV, VI, XIII and XVI present interesting architectural and decorative features.<br \/>\n<strong>Tomb I<\/strong>, with <strong>12 rooms<\/strong> in a &#8220;T\u201d shaped layout, was expanded at a later date. A small <em>dromos<\/em> leads into the quadrangular anti-cell where a pitch roof was reproduced. The domus is elaborately decorated with half-pilasters, panels, <strong>protomes with lunate horns<\/strong>, carved boat-shaped horns, hourglass and zig-zag motifs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomb II<\/strong> also has a \u2018T\u2019 layout and <strong>12 rooms<\/strong>. The entrance is preceded by a small <em>dromos<\/em>, and this is followed by a trapezoidal anti-cell, elaborately decorated: <strong>protomes with lunate horns<\/strong>, half-pilasters and <strong>hourglass motifs<\/strong>. The next room, the largest in the necropolis, has a <strong>decorated double-pitch roof with joists<\/strong>. Other motifs characterise the room: <em>chevrons<\/em>, dog-teeth, false door, <strong>traces of red paint<\/strong> and a <strong>hearth<\/strong> carved into the floor, containing three small stones which resemble flames, and probably represented a burning fire. <\/p>\n<p>Some tombs, like <strong>III<\/strong>, <strong>IV<\/strong> and <strong>XVI<\/strong>, have an &#8220;<strong>architectural facade<\/strong>&#8220;: they show a transformation towards the outline of the Tombs of the Giants, with curved stele engraved in the rock at the entrance, exactly as with later tombs in the Nuragic age.<\/p>\n<p>Leave the town of Ossi and take the Santa Maria di Cea road. At km 8.2, following the tourist signs, turn left onto the dirt track which ends in a paved area.
