The first stage, during the <strong>Middle Bronze Age<\/strong> can just be made out thanks to the later reconstructions. It had<strong> a Protonuraghe<\/strong>\u00a0with an unclear layout. The main structure was then incorporated into a<strong> three-foil defence wall<\/strong>, later replaced by another one whose <strong>4 towers<\/strong> are still visible with narrow corridors and an internal courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>During the<strong> Recent Bronze Age<\/strong> (second stage) the stronghold was expanded with <strong>at least one tower and re-enclosed.<\/strong> A coping was created in the upper part<strong> with angular towers<\/strong>.\u00a0 The construction of <strong>a large tower (9.30 m in diameter)<\/strong>, with at least<strong> 12 crenels<\/strong>, ensured the defence wall was reinforced.<\/p>\n<p>The third stage, near the end of the Final Bronze Age, saw the partial dismantling of the fortress and the construction of <strong>a village<\/strong>. The compound took on the role of sanctuary. One of the elliptical rooms still has <strong>an altar, a seating bench and two ritual hearths<\/strong>. The altar is an important example of a <strong>dew tank mimicking a Nuragic stronghold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The site was used up until the <strong>Judicate period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Leave Villanovafranca along via Giuseppe Verdi and follow it for about 1.1 km. Turn right towards Baccu su Ergiu.
