{"id":29571,"date":"2023-08-03T11:42:26","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/passeggiata-coperta-and-the-galleria-dello-sperone\/"},"modified":"2023-08-03T11:42:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T09:42:26","slug":"passeggiata-coperta-and-the-galleria-dello-sperone","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/passeggiata-coperta-and-the-galleria-dello-sperone\/","title":{"rendered":"Passeggiata Coperta and the Galleria dello Sperone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The history of the <strong>Passeggiata Coperta<\/strong> and the <strong>Galleria dello Sperone <\/strong>is closely linked to the <strong>Bastione di Saint Remy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Stronghold was built, <strong>Piazza Costituzione<\/strong> was occupied by a series of military defence buildings constructed by <strong>Rocco Capellino. <\/strong>They were the\u00a0<strong>Bastione di Santa Caterina,<\/strong> the<strong> Bastione della Zecca<\/strong> and the<strong>\u00a0Bastione dello Sperone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the <strong>unification of the Kingdom of Italy<\/strong> and the <strong>emerging of new city layout criteria<\/strong>, the city underwent a <strong>full architectural overhaul<\/strong>. The desire to give the city a more metropolitan appearance in line with new architectural standards led to the dismantling of the ancient ramparts in <strong>1867.<\/strong> Some structures, like the <strong>Cannoniera<\/strong> or the <strong>Water collection cistern,<\/strong>\u00a0survived.<\/p>\n<p>Between <strong>1896 and 1902<\/strong>, the Bastione di Saint Remy was built on top of these buildings. La Passeggiata was created in the right wing of the Stronghold.<\/p>\n<p>With its incredible <strong>Liberty-style setting<\/strong>, la Passeggiata initially housed a <strong>banquet hall<\/strong>, then becoming the city\u2019s <strong>chic meeting place<\/strong> thanks in part to the magnificent view from its vast windows over <strong>Viale Regina Margherita<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the <strong>twentieth century, <\/strong>the structure changed purpose on a number of occasions.<\/p>\n<p>It initially housed an <strong>i<\/strong><strong>nfirmary during the First World War,<\/strong> then the<strong> Fiera dell\u2019Autarchia in 1936<\/strong>. The <strong>air strikes<\/strong> which hit Cagliari in <strong>1943 <\/strong>severely damaged the structure which later became <strong>a shelter for the homeless in the after-war period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the Passeggiata has been the subject of <strong>significant restoration work<\/strong> and now houses temporary exhibitions and the <strong>Ugo Ugo permanent collection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Galleria dello Sperone<\/strong>, accessible through the Passeggiata, is made up of the <strong>ancient Spanish defence structures<\/strong> which survived demolition at the end of the nineteenth century.
