Generally this place name is linked to the vast <strong>coastal stretch<\/strong> from the <strong>southwestern section <\/strong> of the <strong>Golfo di Cagliari<\/strong>, extending almost <strong>four kilometers<\/strong>, alternating large beaches with small coves and promontories.<\/p>\n<p>The entire coastal sector extends from <strong>Capo S&#8217;Isulotto<\/strong> (southwest), to beyond the <strong>Torre di Chia<\/strong> promontory (also famous for its archaeological site). It includes the <strong>Su Giudeu<\/strong>, <strong>S&#8217;Acqua Durci<\/strong>, <strong>Porto Campana<\/strong>, the small inlet of <strong>Sa Renconada de Monte Cogoni<\/strong>, <strong>Monte Cogoni<\/strong>, <strong>Sa Colonia<\/strong> and<strong>Su Portu<\/strong>. They also include the <strong>isolotto su Giudeu<\/strong> and the three coastal ponds: <strong>Stagno di Stangioni de Su Sali<\/strong>, di <strong>Campana<\/strong> and <strong>Chia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area is almost completely covered by the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) \u201c<strong>Porto Campana<\/strong>\u201d (ITB ITB042230) and its naturalistic importance is represented <em>by habitat<\/em> prioritario \u201c2250*: <strong>Coastal dunes with Juniperus spp.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another fascinating naturalistic element is represented by the <strong>dune belt<\/strong>, which extends at a distance of between thirty and forty metres from the shore.<br \/>\nThe dunes are in times deep and reasonably even and reach a height of about <strong>26 m a.s.l<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The vegetation consists of not only <strong>juniper<\/strong>, but typical species of <strong>mobile dunes<\/strong> (e.g. <strong>Marram grass<\/strong>, <strong>Crucianella <\/strong>) and <strong>stable dunes<\/strong> (<strong>Phillyrea<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong> etc.). In the <strong>pond<\/strong> area, which tend to dry up in the summer season, we can find various typical species of the <strong>brackish environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In general, all the beaches have <strong>clear sand<\/strong> with a <strong>medium-fine<\/strong> grain. The seabeds are generally low and sandy, with water that is transparent and crystal clear.<\/p>\n<p>This area was inhabited as early as the ancient times. Indeed, we find the <strong>archaeological site<\/strong> near the <strong>Torre di Chia<\/strong>, the remains of a Phoenician-Punic <strong>necropolis<\/strong> near the beach of <strong>Sa Colonia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The entire area was recently the subject (2009-2014) of the project <strong>PROVIDUNE<\/strong>, financed by the European Union on the fund <strong>LIFE Nature &amp; Biodiversity<\/strong>.
