{"id":29447,"date":"2023-07-26T13:00:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T11:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/jewish-ghetto\/"},"modified":"2023-08-09T11:39:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T09:39:31","slug":"jewish-ghetto","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/jewish-ghetto\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish ghetto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Jewish ghetto was established during the <strong>House of Savoy domination (1723-1728)<\/strong> as a <strong>barracks for the Compagnia dei Dragoni, <\/strong>dedicated to Carlo Emanuele III.<\/p>\n<p>It stands steeply on the enclosure wall of the historical neighbourhood of Castello, between Santa Croce and Cammino Nuovo. It has two main parts: a southern building with portal entrance, closer to the Santa Croce stronghold, and a building further north which led to the bunker below.<\/p>\n<p>The engineers, Antonio Felice<strong> De Vincenti <\/strong>and <strong>De La Vall\u00e9e <\/strong>(1736) expanded the barracks with stables and sleeping quarters for 198 men.\u00a0 In 1732, thanks to the excavation of the rock and the leftover material, the <strong>Controguardia di Santa Croce was built. <\/strong>The work of the Piedmonts was linked to reinforcing the defences with a counterguard which satisfied modern developments concerning ballistics.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the nineteenth century, after its military presence was disbanded, the buildings were handed over to the city council and sold to private individuals who transformed them into modest homes.
