{"id":29425,"date":"2023-07-26T13:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T11:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/torre-dellelefante\/"},"modified":"2023-08-07T11:28:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T09:28:20","slug":"torre-dellelefante","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/torre-dellelefante\/","title":{"rendered":"Torre dell&#8217;Elefante"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Built in 1307 under the <strong>domination of the House of Pisa<\/strong>, the tower acted as an <strong>entranceway<\/strong> to Castello and as a <strong>defensive stronghold<\/strong>; standing <strong>30 metres high,<\/strong> it provides an excellent view of the city below.<\/p>\n<p>An inscription marks its construction on the wishes of the Pisan consuls, Giovanni De Vecchi and Giovanni Cinquini. The <strong>city\u2019s coat of arms<\/strong> can be found on the side facade and, on a ledge, one of the symbols used by Pisa: the sculpture of an <strong>elephant<\/strong>, hence the tower\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>three-sided<\/strong> square-shaped tower, with matrix features of Pisan military architecture was built using strong stone on the three external sides, extracted from Bonaria, leaving the side facing Castello exposed.<\/p>\n<p>The tower has heavy doorways and portcullises, and is split into <strong>floors<\/strong> by wooden mezzanines, while ledges supported the framework aimed at providing defence.
