{"id":29421,"date":"2023-07-26T13:00:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T11:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/duomo-of-cagliari\/"},"modified":"2023-08-07T11:22:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T09:22:00","slug":"duomo-of-cagliari","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/duomo-of-cagliari\/","title":{"rendered":"Duomo of Cagliari"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Duomo of Cagliari, or rather, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Cecilia was built in the XIII century under the House of Pisa domination. Following their settlement on the hill known as <strong>Castel di Castro,<\/strong>\u00a0the rulers from the House of Pisa felt the need to erect a church to commemorate the duomo in their homeland.<\/p>\n<p>The original layout of <strong>three naves with transept<\/strong> has basically remained unaltered. What has changed are the aesthetic features in Pisan Romanesque style which have been changed and updated down through the centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The right and left <strong>arms<\/strong> of the <strong>transept<\/strong> and the first chapel next to the presbytery, created in the XIV century have Catalan Gothic features.\u00a0The <strong>presbytery<\/strong>, on the other hand, is in Baroque style. In 1618, the archbishop Francisco <strong>Desquivel<\/strong> decided to have the presbytery raised in order to house the Baroque <strong>Cripta dei Martiri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Baroque <strong>facade<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>demolished<\/strong> in the early 1900s, was rebuilt in <strong>Neo-Romanesque style<\/strong> between 1927 and 1930 from a project by the architects Giarrizzo and Vicario. Only the <strong>architrave<\/strong> carved in Acanthus volutes on the main portal has survived from the original Romanesque style facade.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral houses <strong>Guglielmo\u2019s pulpit<\/strong>, now split into two marble ambons created by Master Guglielmo for the duomo of Pisa (1159-1162) and donated to the city in 1312 by the Opera del Duomo di Pisa; the <strong>marble altars<\/strong> of San Isidoro (1683), San Michele (1727), San Cecilia (1780), the<strong> Altarpiece of the Beneficiati<\/strong> (1527-1530) connected to the workshop of Pietro Cavaro who produced the wooden <strong>Cross<\/strong>, the <strong>Monument to Martino il Giovane<\/strong> produced in Genoa by the sculptor Giulio Aprile in 1676 and the pictorial arrangement of the vaults produced by the local artist <strong>Filippo Figari. <\/strong>Lastly, the so-called <strong>Madonna nera<\/strong>, attributable to the XIV century and the work of a sculptor originally from Catalonia, who was inspired by the Virgin in the cathedral in Palma de Mallorca.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":6243,"template":"","tipologia":[979,1008],"categoria":[1023],"tematica":[1030],"class_list":["post-29421","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-chiesa-en","tipologia-chiesa-romanica-en","categoria-architectural-asset","tematica-architecture"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Duomo of Cagliari - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/duomo-of-cagliari\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Duomo of Cagliari - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The Duomo of Cagliari, or rather, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Cecilia was built in the XIII century under the House of Pisa domination.
