{"id":29415,"date":"2023-07-26T13:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T11:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/sa-domu-e-sorcu-tomb-of-the-giants\/"},"modified":"2023-07-28T12:11:32","modified_gmt":"2023-07-28T10:11:32","slug":"sa-domu-e-sorcu-tomb-of-the-giants","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/sa-domu-e-sorcu-tomb-of-the-giants\/","title":{"rendered":"Sa Domu &#8216;e S&#8217;Orcu Tomb of the Giants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The imposing <strong>Sa Domu &#8216;e S&#8217;Orcu Tomb of the Giants<\/strong> sits in a slightly elevated position on the &#8220;<strong>Su Pranu<\/strong>\u201d basaltic plateau, not far from the &#8220;<strong>Conca Sa Cresia<\/strong>\u201d Nuraghe. This is one of the most important examples of <strong>funeral architecture from the Nuragic era<\/strong> and one of the best-preserved monuments from the <strong>proto-historic era<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The monument has some <strong>unusual construction features<\/strong>: the blocks forming the facade are thinner in the masonry lower down and thicker in the upper part. A narrow, low entrance provided access to a <strong>sepulchral chamber<\/strong> which was around 10 m long, 1.25 m wide and approximately 2.5 m high. The internal excavation work uncovered a bed of small pebbles where the <strong>funeral goods<\/strong> which accompanied the dead were laid out.<\/p>\n<p>The monument, which had been very well preserved up until the end of the XX century, suffered a significant <strong>collapse<\/strong> of the main facade in the <strong>period after the Second World War<\/strong>. Subsequent <strong>restoration<\/strong> work meant a part of the large facade could be re-built.<\/p>\n<p>It is easily accessible: take the country road SP 44 from Siddi towards Gonnostramatza and turn right when you see the sign for the &#8220;Sa domu e s&#8217;orcu&#8221; Tomb of the Giants. Follow the cement road leading into the giara.<\/p>\n<p>The site is currently unsupervised.
