{"id":29345,"date":"2023-07-18T17:19:21","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T15:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/montarbu-state-owned-forest\/"},"modified":"2023-07-19T11:59:56","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T09:59:56","slug":"montarbu-state-owned-forest","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/montarbu-state-owned-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Montarbu state-owned forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Montarbu Forest<\/strong> is one of the most attractive in <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, and extends across almost 2,800 hectares, between the area of <strong>Seui<\/strong> and partially <strong>Ussassai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It extends across the slopes of the <strong>Monte Tonneri massif<\/strong>, with its imposing <strong>limestone cliff<\/strong>. The most significant peaks are <strong>Montarbu<\/strong> (1,304 m. a.s.l.) and <strong>Pizzu Margiani Pubusa<\/strong> (1,324 m. a.s.l.). To the north, the river <strong>Flumendosa<\/strong>, separates it from the <strong>Gennargentu Massif<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The main vegetation is <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> with <strong>natural forests of holm oak<\/strong>, <strong>holly<\/strong>, <strong>English Yew<\/strong> and <strong>maple trees<\/strong>. Deeper into the forest, we can find<strong> ash trees<\/strong>, <strong>European hornbeam<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>alders<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>willow trees<\/strong>. <strong>Monumental specimens of holm oak<\/strong> can also be found in the forest. The largest and most famous <strong>monumental tree<\/strong> is known as <em><strong>s&#8217;Ilixi &#8216;e Canali<\/strong><\/em>. It can be found on the western edge of the forest, near the <strong>Riu Su Canali<\/strong>, but easily reached from the forest.<\/p>\n<p>As for the <strong>fauna,<\/strong> Montarbu hosts a wealth of important creatures, so much so, that the forest has been a <strong>fauna protection oasis<\/strong> since 1980. Animal species worth mentioning include the <strong>mouflon<\/strong>, the <strong>boar<\/strong>, the <strong>wild cat<\/strong> and the <strong>dormouse<\/strong>. Birds that can be spotted include the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, <strong>Bonelli\u2019s eagle<\/strong>, the<strong> peregrine falcon<\/strong>, the <strong>buzzard<\/strong>, the <strong>sparrowhawk<\/strong>, the <strong>goshawk<\/strong>, the <strong>kite<\/strong>, the <strong>griffon<\/strong> and the <strong>Cinereous vulture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The area is full of continuously flowing <strong>rivers<\/strong> which originate from the limestone massif of <strong>Monte Tonneri<\/strong>. The most famous ones include the <strong>rio Ermolinos<\/strong>, the <strong>rio Funtana d\u2019Oru<\/strong> and the <strong>Liscerzu<\/strong>. There are also several water sources which were discovered such as the <strong>Funtana d&#8217;Oro<\/strong>, <strong>Strumpu Seidi<\/strong>, <strong>S&#8217;Orroli, Pirarba<\/strong>, <strong>Is Medduris<\/strong>, <strong>Nuletta<\/strong>, <strong>Middai<\/strong> and <strong>Funtana Dorada<\/strong> springs.<\/p>\n<p>The forest is also home to some <strong>important archaeological sites<\/strong>, such as the ruins of the <strong>sacred spring<\/strong> and the <strong>Nuragic settlement<\/strong> of <strong>S&#8217;Orgioloniga<\/strong> and the <strong>Anal\u00f9 Nuraghe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most picturesque ways to reach the forest is definitely by taking the <strong>Trenino Verde<\/strong> (Green Train), in the direction of the Montarbu state-owned forest, departing from Mandas station.<\/p>\n<p>The area is not only a Fauna Oasis but is also part of the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) \u201c<strong>Monti del Gennargentu<\/strong>\u201d (ITB021103), regulated by the <strong>Rete Natura 2000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":27517,"template":"","tipologia":[1034],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29345","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-forest","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Montarbu state-owned forest - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/montarbu-state-owned-forest\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Montarbu state-owned forest - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The Montarbu Forest is one of the most attractive in Sardinia, and extends across almost 2,800 hectares, between the area of Seui and partially Ussassai.
