{"id":29337,"date":"2023-07-18T17:19:19","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T15:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/festa-di-santa-maria-de-sauccu\/"},"modified":"2023-07-25T16:20:29","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T14:20:29","slug":"festa-di-santa-maria-de-sauccu","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/festa-di-santa-maria-de-sauccu\/","title":{"rendered":"Festa di Santa Maria de Sauccu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Feast of Santa Maria de Sauccu is held from<strong> 7 to 17 September<\/strong> near the <strong>rural sanctuary dedicated to the Saint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>sanctuary appears to date back to 1122<\/strong>, originally <strong>belonging to the order of the Benedictine monks<\/strong> and located near a monastery. It sits at 850 m on the Marghine mountain and<strong> is part of the town of Bolotana<\/strong>; it is, however, the inhabitants of Bortigali who renew this feast each year in honour of the Santa Maria de Sauccu.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary stands in the area of an ancient <strong>Medieval village.<\/strong> The small village houses, known as <strong>&#8220;Muristenes&#8221;<\/strong>, accommodate those reciting the novena and pilgrims during the religious celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, one day <strong>three shepherds accidentally found a statue of the Madonna with child behind an elderberry bush (&#8220;sauccu&#8221;)<\/strong>. It was a small, terracotta<strong> statue<\/strong> about <strong>25 cm tall<\/strong>. This casual finding led to the creation of the sanctuary and the procession in her honour.<\/p>\n<p>The procession begins on <strong>7 September at dawn<\/strong>. The <strong>statue of Santa Mariedda<\/strong> (as she is called by the people of Bortigali) <strong>is carried from the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli as far as the rural sanctuary<\/strong>. The procession is led by the <strong>worker, appointed annually<\/strong>, who is in charge of organising the entire celebration; he is followed by the <strong>riflemen and devotees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The second procession begins at<strong> 9 in the morning in the Church of Santa Croce<\/strong>, led by the statue of <strong>Santa Maria &#8220;Manna&#8221; (large)<\/strong> accompanied by horsemen and the sound of drummers.<\/p>\n<p>When both statues reach the rural s<strong>anctuary which is about 20 km from the centre of Bortigali<\/strong>, the <strong>nine days of celebrations<\/strong> begin, alternating novenas, so moments dedicated to the faith, with moments given over to music, dancing and food.<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>17th, the return procession and the simulacrum of Santa Maria Manna<\/strong> are held.
