{"id":29306,"date":"2023-07-14T15:05:08","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T13:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/giara-di-gesturi\/"},"modified":"2023-07-18T14:09:20","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T12:09:20","slug":"giara-di-gesturi","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/giara-di-gesturi\/","title":{"rendered":"Giara di Gesturi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Giara di Gesturi<\/strong> (<strong><em>Sa Jara Manna<\/em><\/strong>), is a plateau in central-southern Sardinia extending for over <strong>4,400 hectares<\/strong>. The area falls mainly within the municipality of <strong>Gesturi<\/strong> and to a lesser extent, the municipalities of <strong>Genoni<\/strong>, <strong>Tuili<\/strong> and <strong>Setzu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>geological nature<\/strong> of the plateau is linked to <strong>basaltic rock<\/strong>, with tabulate shape, resting above <strong>Miocene marls<\/strong>. The average height of the plateau is around <strong>560 m<\/strong>. a.s.l. and there are only two elevations present: <strong>Monti Zepparedda<\/strong> (608 m) and <strong>Zeppara Manna<\/strong> (581 m). These two are the remains of two <strong>ancient volcanic cones<\/strong> whose <strong>craters can still be distinguished<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the unusual aspects of the Giara are the &#8220;<strong>Pa\u00f9li<\/strong>&#8220;, small, temporary ponds which form due to rainwater, in the basins of the basaltic rocks.<\/p>\n<p>There are about <strong>thirty Pauli<\/strong> of various sizes, with a depth which varies from thirty centimetres to around a metre. The most well know is the &#8220;<strong>Pa\u00f9li majore<\/strong>&#8220;, almost a small lake and easily accessible in the south-western part of the plateau.<\/p>\n<p>Unique <strong><em>habitats<\/em><\/strong> are associated with the Pa\u00f9li, with the presence of a typical <strong>aquatic vegetation<\/strong>. The most characteristic species include the <strong>White water-crowfoot<\/strong> which in springtime cover the waters in the small ponds. The paulis are also home to a number of <strong>animal species<\/strong> such as the <strong>Sardinian tree frog<\/strong> and the <strong>European green toad<\/strong>, as well as two <strong>small crustaceans<\/strong> considered genuine living fossils.<\/p>\n<p>In the driest parts of the plateau, the vegetation is like meadows and in other sectors we find <strong>forest<\/strong> areas with <strong>cork<\/strong> trees, <strong>downy oak<\/strong>, <strong>holm oak<\/strong> and <strong>wild olive<\/strong> (e.g. <strong>Scala Corte Broccia<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>There are also several <strong>natural springs<\/strong> some of the most important being the <strong><em>Mitza Pistincu<\/em><\/strong> (to the southeast), <em><strong>Funtana Cannas<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Sa Jana<\/strong><\/em> (to the north).<\/p>\n<p>Another typical <strong>fauna species<\/strong> and exclusive to Sardinia and more so to this area is the \u201c<strong>Giara horse<\/strong>\u201d. These are wild animals and are currently at <strong>serious risk of extinction<\/strong>. As well as a <strong>small body<\/strong> and <strong>low stature<\/strong>, the horses have <strong>unique features<\/strong>, such as <strong>almond-shaped eyes<\/strong> and <strong>long manes<\/strong>.
