{"id":29300,"date":"2023-07-14T15:05:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T13:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/gola-di-gorroppu\/"},"modified":"2023-07-18T12:15:09","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T10:15:09","slug":"gola-di-gorroppu","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/gola-di-gorroppu\/","title":{"rendered":"Gorroppu Canyon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>gola di Gorropu<\/strong> is a deep <em>canyon<\/em> in the <strong>Supramonte<\/strong>, between <strong>Barbagia<\/strong> and <strong>Ogliastra<\/strong>, on the border between the municipalities of <strong>Orgosolo<\/strong> and <strong>Urzulei<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe toponomy \u201c<em><strong>gorropu<\/strong><\/em>\u201d means \u201c<strong>precipice<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>excavated area<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This deep <strong>karstic gorge<\/strong> originates from the flow of water from the <strong>Rio Flumineddu<\/strong> along a <strong>fault<\/strong> line of the <strong>limestone rocks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The width of the <em>canyon<\/em> varies from around 4 metres to over 10 metres in the widest parts. The walls reach heights of over 500 metres and preserve <strong>fossils<\/strong> dating from between 190 and 60 million years ago. It is considered the deepest canyon in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its unique features, <strong>Gorropu<\/strong> is a natural environment and an example of considerable <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>. Here we find <strong>typical plants<\/strong>\u00a0like the<strong> Nuragica columbine<\/strong>, a herbaceous species found nowhere else in the world. The <strong>Sardinian brook salamander<\/strong> lives in the pools of the <strong>rio Flumineddu<\/strong> and is one of the rarest amphibians in Europe. It is equally not uncommon to come across <strong>mouflons<\/strong> or spot the <strong>golden eagle<\/strong>, which nests in the <em>canyon\u2019s<\/em> walls.<\/p>\n<p>It can be accessed from the east along the trunk road SS 125 in the stretch between Dorgali and Baunei. You then take a path through a <strong>forest of holm oak<\/strong>, <strong>fern<\/strong>, <strong>strawberry trees<\/strong> and other essences of <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong>, until you come to the entrance to the <em>canyon<\/em> which carves out the limestone rocks of the <strong>Costa Silana<\/strong>.<br \/>\nCross the <strong>Supramonte<\/strong> from the south until you come firstly to the <strong>Natural Monument<\/strong> of <strong>Pischina Urthaddala<\/strong>, and then the <strong>Cascata de sa Giuntura<\/strong>. This marks the entrance upstream to the gorge and drops down over the conjoining <strong>limestone wall<\/strong> between the <strong>rio Flumineddu<\/strong> and the <strong>Codula Orbisi<\/strong>.<br \/>\nFrom the north, starting from Dorgali across the <strong>Valle di Oddoene<\/strong>, alongside the <strong>rio Flumineddu<\/strong> river and south-eastern slope of <strong>monte Oddeu <\/strong>(1083 m. a.s.l.), in the midst of white limestone masses and the <strong>holm oaks of Sas Baddes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Gola di Gorroppu<\/strong> sits in an area which is part of the <strong>Sites of Community Importance<\/strong> (SCI) &#8220;<strong>Supramonte di Oliena, Orgosolo e Urzulei &#8211; Su Sercone<\/strong>&#8221; (ITB002212) regulated by <strong>Rete Natura 2000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":9522,"template":"","tipologia":[978,1037],"categoria":[1022],"tematica":[1031],"class_list":["post-29300","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-monumento-naturale-en","tipologia-river-valley","categoria-naturalistic-asset","tematica-nature"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Gorroppu Canyon - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/gola-di-gorroppu\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Gorroppu Canyon - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The gola di Gorropu is a deep canyon in the Supramonte, between Barbagia and Ogliastra, on the border between the municipalities of Orgosolo and Urzulei.
