{"id":29296,"date":"2023-07-14T15:05:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T13:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/oasi-di-capo-sandalo\/"},"modified":"2023-07-18T11:31:07","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T09:31:07","slug":"oasi-di-capo-sandalo","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/oasi-di-capo-sandalo\/","title":{"rendered":"Capo Sandalo Oasis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Capo Sandalo<\/strong> is one of the promontories on the western side of the <strong>Isola del San Pietro<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>Carloforte<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe area, also well known for the stunning <strong>nineteenth-century lighthouse<\/strong> overlooking it, has an imposing <strong>rockface overhanging the sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The promontory and cliff <strong>rock<\/strong> are <strong>volcanic<\/strong> and to be precise, <strong>welded tuff<\/strong>.\u00a0The promontory features a continuation of <strong>small rocky coves<\/strong> and <strong>steep cliffs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Opposite the Capo, we can find the small <strong>isola del Corno<\/strong>, a popular spot with diving and recreational fishing enthusiasts, given its abundance of <strong>marine life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the most important <strong>naturalistic feature<\/strong> in this area is the presence of the <strong>Eleonora&#8217;s Falcon<\/strong>. This rare bird of prey, originally from <strong>Madagascar<\/strong>, nests on the cliffs, in the middle of <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> bushes.<\/p>\n<p>This led to the establishment of the <strong>LIPU avifauna oasis<\/strong> extending from Cala Vinagra, in the north, passing through <strong>Cala Fico<\/strong>, as far as <strong>Capo Sandalo<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTradition has it that it was precisely the <strong>Judge Eleonora D\u2019Arborea<\/strong> (1347-1403) who declared the <strong>falcons a protected species in Sardinia<\/strong>. This is why the name <strong>Eleonora\u2019s Falcon<\/strong> was given to the bird in her honour, and whose scientific name is <em><strong>Falco eleonorae<\/strong><\/em> (<em>Falco eleonorae<\/em> Gen\u00e9, 1839).<\/p>\n<p>As well as this extremely rare species, the reefs in the area are also home to <strong>kestrels<\/strong>, <strong>buzzards<\/strong> and <strong>Peregrine falcons<\/strong>. Amidst the surface rocks, you can also spot the <strong>Audouin&#8217;s gull, <\/strong>with its unusual coral red beak, and the <strong>European shag from its tuft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A large belvedere has been set up on the rocks known as the <strong>Piazzale panoramico di Capo Rosso<\/strong>. From here, you can admire most of the island\u2019s south-western coast, towards the cliffs of <strong>Punta dei Cannoni<\/strong> and <strong>Punta Spalmatore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Faro di Capo Sandalo<\/strong> is considered <strong>Italy\u2019s most westerly lighthouse<\/strong>.
