{"id":29188,"date":"2023-07-04T17:25:44","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T15:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/piscinas-beach-and-dune\/"},"modified":"2023-07-11T17:03:34","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T15:03:34","slug":"piscinas-beach-and-dune","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/piscinas-beach-and-dune\/","title":{"rendered":"Piscinas Beach and Dune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Piscinas beach<\/strong> sits on the <strong>west coast of Sardinia<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>Arbus<\/strong>, along the coastline known as <strong>Costa Verde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This stretch of coastline is famous for its <strong>coastal dune system<\/strong>. Indeed, the <strong>Dunes of Piscinas<\/strong> represent an area of <strong>sandy dunes<\/strong> which extend for around <strong>28 square kilometres<\/strong>.<br \/>\nMajestic sparkling sandy dunes declared a <strong>UNESCO Heritage Site<\/strong>.\u00a0The dunes extend from the coast <strong>towards the hinterland<\/strong> for around <strong>two kilometres<\/strong> and reach a <strong>height of 100 m a.s.l.<\/strong>, making them <strong>among the highest dunes in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>seabed<\/strong> is clear and becomes instantly deep, with a step configuration. The waters are home to a variety of <strong>fish<\/strong>, including <strong>sand steenbras<\/strong>, <strong>croakers<\/strong> and <strong>gilthead bream<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAs along most of the <strong>Costa Verde<\/strong>, Piscinas is also exposed to <strong>winds and rough seas caused by the Mistral Wind<\/strong>, so great care needs to be taken when swimming there.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>flora<\/strong> found in the dunes and surrounding area includes <strong>century-old juniper<\/strong>, <strong>mastic trees<\/strong>, <strong>wild olive<\/strong>, <strong>broom<\/strong> and <strong>euphorbia<\/strong>. We can find <strong>salt cedars<\/strong> and <strong>juncus<\/strong> near the <strong>rio Naracauli<\/strong> river which flows into the seaboard. From Spring onwards, in the sandy areas, <strong>hoary stock<\/strong>, the <strong>sea daffodil<\/strong> and the <strong>yellow horned poppy<\/strong> blossom.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fauna<\/strong> living in the area includes the <strong>Sardinian deer<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>Mediterranean tortoise<\/strong> and the <strong>Loggerhead sea turtle<\/strong>, which often nests and deposits its eggs on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, it was a <strong>mining<\/strong> area. Indeed the <strong>rio Piscinas<\/strong>, a torrential river which emerges to the north of the beach area, starts in the area of the<strong><\/strong> <strong>Montevecchio<\/strong> mines. The river, also known as the \u201c<strong>red river<\/strong>\u201d, is well known precisely for its red coloured water, influenced by the waters coming from the disused mines.<\/p>\n<p>The only building in Piscinas was the <strong>mining warehouse<\/strong> for the nearby mines of <strong>Gennamari<\/strong> and <strong>Ingurtosu<\/strong>, declared a <strong>National Monument<\/strong> in 1985 <strong>by the Ministry for Heritage and the Environment<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAfter being a warehouse, the building became a <strong>seaside summer camp<\/strong> for the mining company\u2019s children. Following on from this (at the start of the 1990s) it was turned into a <strong>hotel<\/strong> by <strong>Sergio Caroli<\/strong>, former colonel of the Folgore paratroopers and son of the last director of the <strong>Ingurtosu mine<\/strong>. The entrance to the hotel is still the <strong>original tunnel<\/strong> dug out at the start of the 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>The residential areas are quite far from the beach but there are two <strong>kiosks-restaurants<\/strong>, which also offer <strong>bathing facilities<\/strong>.
